Electrocutionist charges partial Dubai crowd
Electrocutionist roared past Brass Hat in the stretch and won the $6 million Dubai World Cup on Saturday night, giving the royal family of Dubai a victory in front of a cheering home crowd at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Despite leaving from the unfavorable inside post in the 11-horse field, Electrocutionist was moved outside by jockey Frankie Dettori to set up a thrilling finish.
With U.S.-based Brass Hat and Wilko fighting for the lead, Electrocutionist came blazing past on the outside to earn the winner’s share of $3.6 million for Sheik Mohammed’s Dubai-based Godolphin Racing.
Electrocutionist won by 11/4 lengths over Brass Hat, with Wilko third.
“I just had to find my spot,” Dettori said. “When I got him outside I knew he would do it. He has a lot of heart. From the No. 1 draw to give away two lengths to everybody … what a great horse.”
The World Cup capped the $21.25 million World Cup program, which also saw Godolphin’s Discreet Cat win the $2 million UAE Derby and perhaps earn a trip to America to run in the Kentucky Derby on May. 6.
•With a City, the biggest long shot on the board, won the $500,000 Lane’s End Stakes – a Kentucky Derby prep – at 48-1 odds at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.
