Glen Dow wins competition

Several students of the Glen Dow Academy took home awards during the recent Inland Empire Cosmetology Association spring competition. The academy won the Cosmetology School Traveling Trophy for the 18th year. The placers and their category are listed.

• Army National Guard Pvt. Rodney Steinmetz recently graduated from the chaplain assistant advanced individual training course at Fort Jackson, S.C. He also was named an honor graduate. Steinmetz is a 1998 graduate of Pullman High School and is the son of Carl and Teena Steinmetz of Pullman.

Leah Borg of Spokane and Christopher Hiles of Colfax were honored recently at Washington State University College of Agriculture, Human and Natural Resource Sciences awards banquet.

Borg received the Family Consumer Scientist of the Year award. A senior majoring in human nutrition, Borg also volunteers at the Harvest House, Pullman Food Bank, Pullman Regional Hospital and the Community Child Care Center.

Hiles was named Capital Press Outstanding Junior in Agriculture. Hiles is a nontraditional student who is studying horticulture. He is the greenhouse manager for the Horticulture Club.

Medical Lake High School students Cory Lund and Greg Vaughn have been selected to attend the U.S. Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp. They are two of 470 JROTC cadets selected from 1,600 applicants. Those selected were required to have a grade-point average of 3.0 or above, be at least a sophomore in high school, be enrolled in college-prep math and science course and have demonstrated leadership potential.

Idaho

• University of Idaho entomologist Nilsa Bosque-Perez was recently given a Recognition Award by the Entomological Society of America, Pacific Branch. The award is given in recognition of significant contributions to the advancement of agriculture through work in the field of entomology.

Since arriving at the UI in 1997 Bosque-Perez has researched major insect pests of wheat and the impact of management practices on insect biodiversity. As one of five branch winners, Bosque-Perez will be considered for a national award later in the year.

• Four North Idaho high school students recently were honored in the Lt. George Farragut Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution annual Good Citizen Program and Scholarship Contest. Andrew McPherson was chosen as Kellogg High School’s Good Citizen. He also won first place in the scholarship portion of the contest.

Other winners in the Good Citizen Program were Ross Hartmann of Wallace, Heather Koepl of Post Falls and Katherine Swick of Lake City high schools.
