Ian Howard is an eighth-grader at Evergreen Middle School. His future is bright, and he knows it because he works hard and stays focused.

He is on the honor roll and has completed two semesters of the Evergreen leadership program. He also plays the trumpet and was selected to play in the Washington State Junior All-State Program, and two weeks ago, he became caregiver to 11 baby chicks that he will raise on his own. Besides all this, he is a dedicated gymnast.

“He stood on his head before he stood on his feet,” said his mother, Sharon Howard. His early ability to stand on his head and do the splits convinced Sharon to put him in a gymnastics day camp when he was 3. He took to the sport quickly and began competing when he was 5.

Ian competes for Funtastics Gymnastics in Coeur d’Alene and is the highest-level male gymnast in the area. “He’s encouraging to the other kids,” said coach Don Gardiner. “He sets a very good example.”

He has won numerous ribbons, plaques and trophies. Recently, Ian competed at the Idaho State Gymnastics final where he placed first in the state.

He practices 12 hours a week on rings, parallel bars, high bar, vault, pommel horse and floor exercise. He executes moves including a round off back handspring double back flip, a front handspring followed by a twisting tuck, and on the bars, giants and double back flip dismounts. He also does 50 pushups every night before bed.

While he deals with juvenile attitudes toward his sport of choice, he keeps his outlook positive, knowing that his dedication will ensure success in his future. A college or service academy scholarship, the Olympics or anything else that takes strength, focus and dedication is within reach of his well-earned grip.
