Silvertips select Mead High’s Smith
Local product Michael Smith was drafted in the sixth round of the Western Hockey League draft Thursday by the Everett Silvertips, a U.S. Division rival of the Chiefs.
Smith, 15, is a goalie with the Spokane Americans Youth Hockey Association. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound right-hander played up a level for SAYHA’s traveling midget team last season. He’s also played eight years of spring hockey with the Vancouver (British Columbia) Selects.
“I’m pretty excited – it’s just a good feeling knowing that I’m up there,” Smith said by telephone, on his way to this weekend’s USA Hockey Select Camp in Kent, Wash.
Smith, a freshman at Mead High School, will be in Everett’s camp this fall.
