District 8 4A play-in: Bryan Karwacki hit a tie-breaking solo homer in the third inning and went 3 for 4 with two runs scored as Gonzaga Prep (10-11) won a sixth-place Greater Spokane League tie-breaker by knocking off Central Valley (9-12) 7-3.

Softball

“Great Northern League: Ashley Sterk was 2 for 5 with three RBIs as Pullman (12-5, 8-2) opened a doubleheader with a 10-4 win over visiting Chewelah (9-7, 3-6). In the second game, Alyssa Garro finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs and the Greyhounds scored in every inning to rout Chewelah 11-1 in five innings.

Track and field

Kendall Abbey and Eleaya Schuerch each scored wins as East Valley won the girls team title at the Strandberg Invitational at Central Valley High School. Abbey won the long jump (15 feet, 6 3/4 inches), while Schuerch was first in the triple jump (36-7 1/2). EV scored 97.33 points, with Colville (91) finishing in second. On the boys’ side, CV got wins from Sean Thompson and its 4x800 relay team to win the team title. Thompson won the high jump (5-10), and CV’s 4x800 relay team won easily, finishing in 8 minutes, 49.70 seconds to help the team to 105 points. Moscow, led by Anthony Williams’ wins in the 100 (11.30) and 400 (52.50), took second with 95 points. Cheney’s boys and Moscow’s girls placed third.
