Swing in the Cathedral

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist is hosting Swing in the Cathedral, a concert to benefit Catholic Charities.

Tuxedo Junction, an 18-piece swing band made up of Spokane and Coeur d’Alene musicians, will perform at the event Friday at 7 p.m. at the cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave.

With a motto of “need, not creed,” Catholic Charities last year provided food and/or shelter to more than 50,000 people, regardless of religious belief, in Eastern Washington.

Mother’s Day service

Many mothers have lost children in a variety of ways, and Manito Presbyterian Church, 401 E. 30th Ave., is holding a Mother’s Day service for those women today at 4 p.m.

Candle lighting, silence, comforting music, Scripture reading and more will be included in the service, meant to bring comfort to those in mourning.

Speakers

•The Rev. Roger Bruggink and his wife, Lee, missionaries who have lived in Oman and Yemen, will speak at the Lutheran Book Parlor, 1414 W. Broadway Ave., Sunday at 7 p.m.

Their topic is “Same Roots, Different Routes.”

• The Rev. Tom Doyle, a Catholic priest, author and advocate for victims of priest sexual abuse, will speak Monday at 7 p.m. at Garland Avenue Alliance Church, 2011 W. Garland Ave.

Doyle will discuss the treatment of victims of sexual abuse by the clergy, the culture of silence in the church and new directions the church must take to survive.

New organ dedication

St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church, 1325 E. Queen Ave., will present a miniconcert and organ dedication Sunday at 10:30 a.m.

The organ will be dedicated to the memory of longtime parishioner and arts patron Isabel d’Urbal.

Christian Youth Theater

Members of Christian Youth Theater will perform at two events over the coming week.

The first is a preview of “Seussical,” based on the books by Dr. Seuss, today at 2 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main Ave.

The troupe will perform its entire production May 26 through June 3 at The Met. Today’s performance will consist of readings from the books.

The theater also will present its production of “Stuart Little” on Friday at 7 p.m., May 20 at 3 and 7 p.m. and May 21 at 3 p.m. at the CYT Performing Arts Center, 708 W. Nora Ave.

Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for children 12 and younger and for seniors. All tickets are $10 at the door.

Church sales

Mission Community Presbyterian Church, 2103 E. Mission Ave., is presenting its annual yard sale today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The church is also holding a special service Sunday at 10:30 a.m. featuring Sam Schnall, a rabbinical assistant.

Items for sale will include bouquets, gardening tools and books, arts and crafts, baked goods and used items from Second Hand Rose.

Proceeds will benefit the church.
