Get out, Get going

The Spokesman-Review

Thanks, Mom

Sunday, of course, is Mother’s Day. (Note to procrastinators and the just plain forgetful – it’s still not too late to run out and get a card and gift.) It’s the one day of the year we remember our moms and thank them for wiping our noses when we were young and putting up with our attitude in the teen years.

Traditions can range from eating a family meal together at home to brunch at a fancy restaurant. But a good way to end the experience might be to take mom up toview the 8,000-plus tulips and daffodils in bloom at the Arbor Crest Wine Cellars. The views from the historic building at the top of the hill also are stunning. Viewing is from noon to 5 p.m. daily until the end of the month. The winery is at 4705 N. Fruithill Road.

Break out the trowel

With the weather warming, it’s not too early to start thinking about what to plant in your yard. The Gardeners of Spokane will host its annual spring plant sale today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hutton Settlement Greenhouse, 10301 E. Upriver Drive. The sale will continue each Saturday in May. Call 924-7196 for information.

There will be a variety of annuals, perennials and vegetables for sale. It’s not too early to plant perennials, but many local gardeners wait until the snow melts from Mica Peak to plant annuals because of the area’s late frosts. Feel free to buy annuals, but you might want to leave them in the house for a couple of weeks and keep an eye on the weather forecast.
