Beavers hammer Cougars 16-1

Mitch Canham collected five RBIs and scored three runs, and Dallas Buck struck out six to collect his 10th win as No. 6 Oregon State handed Washington State a 16-1 loss Friday night in the opener of a Pacific-10 Conference baseball series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Freshman Jared Prince led off the bottom of the second inning with a home run as the Cougars (34-19) jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The Beavers (36-13) tied the game in the third and then exploded for 10 runs in the fifth.

The teams meet today at 2 p.m.

Men’s golf

Washington’s Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot a second-round 72 and stands in a tie for 75th place at 2-over-par 146 at the NCAA West Regional Championship in Tucson, Ariz.

The Huskies are locked in a tie for ninth at 569.

Washington State’s Ryan Witz dropped into a tie for 81st after shooting a 75.

Arizona leads heading into the final round at 552.

Softball

Community Colleges of Spokane won the opener but dropped its second contest and stands in the loser’s bracket after the first day of the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges tournament at Delta Park in Portland.

Stephanie Day belted a home run and Jessie LaPlante earned the win on the mound as the Sasquatch edged Highline (11-30) 4-3 in the first game.

Katie Fleer no-hit CCS while striking out 11 as Chemeketa (40-8) blanked the Sasquatch (37-9) 6-0 in the second round. The Sasquatch face Centralia in a loser-out contest today at 9 a.m.

•Freshman pitcher Danielle Lawrie gave up one hit in five innings and struck out seven to pick up her second straight postseason win as Washington defeated Kansas (25-25) 6-0 in the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament at Gail Miller Field in Provo, Utah.

Dena Tyson hit a two-run home run and a double for the Huskies (34-23), who advance to today’s regional championship game, which is slated for 11 a.m.

Men’s tennis

Brian Heimbecker highlighted a trio of CC Spokane first-day winners at the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championship at Spokane Falls CC.

Heimbecker’s win came in No. 1 singles action, while Eric Town and Brian Cadousteau’s came in Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.

Women’s tennis

CC Spokane’s Kaylan Crane earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Michelle Dawson of Green River in No. 1 singles action at the NWAACC championship at SFCC.
