Bill Clinton has another book deal

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

After writing an autobiography that sold more than 2 million copies, former President Bill Clinton has struck another book deal.

Alfred A. Knopf will publish the new work, in which Clinton will focus on public service and individual citizen activism based on people he has met in the six years since he left the White House – from doctors fighting to treat AIDS in Africa to neighborhoods trying to rebuild after Hurricane Katrina,.

The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Clinton is said to have received an advance of $10 million to $12 million for writing “My Life,” which Knopf published in 2004.

The new, yet-untitled book is expected to be released late next year or early in 2008.

Book sales up – for now

The publishing industry enjoyed a strong year in 2005, with increases in both revenues (5.9 percent, to just under $34.6 billion) and the number of books sold (3.8 percent, to 3.1 billion).

But projections for long-term growth remain limited because people increasingly don’t read as much anymore, according to a report released Friday by the Book Industry Study Group.

Over the past few years, the number of books published has soared even as sales fell. That changed in 2005, when the number of books released actually dropped, to 172,000.
