GSL volleyball sweeps

Greater Spokane League volleyball teams proved just how tough they really are Friday night.

Teams from the GSL swept visiting teams from the Columbia Basin League across the board in the first round of the 4A regional tournament at Mead and Mt. Spokane.

Brynn DeLong had 18 kills, 13 digs and four blocks as Shadle Park, the lowest seed from the GSL, stunned top-seeded Wenatchee 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-17 at Mt. Spokane.

Also at Mt. Spokane, Laurie Yearout had 17 assists, nine digs and two blocks as Lewis and Clark swept Walla Walla 25-16, 25-18, 25-22. Erica Ehlo had 11 kills and two blocks for the Tigers and teammate Janae Forney finished with five aces.

Alexis Olgard had 12 kills and five blocks and teammate Lindsey Petroni finished with 14 digs and three aces as GSL No. 1 Mead easily handled Eisenhower 25-12, 25-18, 25-17 at Mead.

Gonzaga Prep swept CBL No. 3 Richland 25-22, 25-23, 25-22 at Mead. Kristana Fruci led G-Prep with 15 kills while Chrissy Topliff had 24 digs and Brittnee Brown 37 assists. It was only Richland’s second loss of the season after going unbeaten in league play.

Tournament play resumes today. Mead and G-Prep will face off at 10 a.m. and LC will meet Shadle at 11:30. Both are at Mead. The consolation semifinals, at Mt. Spokane, begin at 10 a.m., with the match between Walla Walla and Wenatchee. Richland and Ike play at 11:30.

The remaining matches of the day will be at Mead, with the championship set for 5 p.m.

Boys soccer

Taylor Baek’s goal in the sixth minute proved to be the difference as St. George’s blanked Riverside Christian 1-0 in a 1B/2B regional playoff game at Sunnyside High School. The Dragons (11-3-4) will advance to play Northwest Christian in the first round of the state tournament. Riverside Christian is finished.
