NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Checker Auto Parts 500

Site: Avondale, Ariz. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 5 p.m.); Sunday, race (NBC, 2:30 p.m.). Track: Phoenix International Raceway (tri-oval, 1 mile, 11 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 9 degrees banking in turns 3-4). Race distance: 500 miles, 500 laps. Last race: Tony Stewart led 278 of 339 laps, including the five extra laps because of a late caution, to win the Dickies 500 at Texas Motor Speedway. Jimmie Johnson quietly grabbed the point lead away from Matt Kenseth by 17 points with a second-place finish. Last year: A few hours after older brother Kurt was suspended for the final two races of the season for a run-in with police earlier in the weekend, 20-year-old Kyle Busch won the Checker Auto Parts 500, his second Cup victory in 41 starts. Two days earlier, Kurt was cited for reckless driving after a confrontation with Maricopa County deputies. Fast facts: All 10 Chase drivers changed positions in the standings following last week’s race. Johnson is the fourth to have the lead. … Stewart has won three of the eight Chase races. … Five of the last six races at Phoenix have been won from a starting position outside the top 10. … Kevin Harvick won the Subway Fresh 500 at Avondale on April 22. … Crew member Craig Curione, the front tire carrier for Scott Riggs, was suspended indefinitely by NASCAR on Tuesday for shoving Harvick after last week’s race. The push knocked Harvick, his wife and NASCAR official John Sacco to the ground. The Harvicks were not injured, but Sacco sprained his ankle. Curione also was fined $10,000. Next race: Ford 400, Nov. 19, Homestead, Fla.

NASCAR BUSCH

Arizona Travel 200

Site: Avondale, Ariz. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (Speed Channel, Noon), race (NBC, 2:30 p.m.). Track: Phoenix International Raceway (tri-oval, 1 mile, 11 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 9 degrees banking in turns 3-4). Race distance: 200 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Kevin Harvick dominated the field again in the O’Reilly Challenge 300 at Texas Motor Speedway, winning for the second straight week and third time in his last four starts. It was the ninth Busch victory of what is already a championship season for the Nextel Cup star. Last year: Carl Edwards held off Clint Bowyer to take the Arizona 200, becoming the first Busch driver to win a Phoenix race from the pole. Fast facts: Cup drivers have won 31 of 33 Busch races this season. … Juan Pablo Montoya finished 28th last weekend after placing 11th in his Busch and NASCAR debut the previous week. … Greg Biffle is the only multiple winner at Phoenix and has finished among the top 10 in all seven of his Busch starts at the track, including five top fives. … Harvick won the Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Avondale on April 21. Next race: Ford 300, Nov. 18, Homestead, Fla.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Casino Arizona 150

Site: Avondale, Ariz. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 12:15 p.m., race (Speed Channel, 8 p.m.). Track: Phoenix International Raceway (tri-oval, 1 mile, 11 degrees banking in turns 1-2, 9 degrees banking in turns 3-4). Race distance: 150 miles, 150 laps. Last race: Clint Bowyer had a dominating run at Texas, then held the lead after a green-white finish to win in only his third truck start. Bowyer led 103 of 148 laps and finished 0.279 seconds ahead of Kyle Busch, giving Chevrolet a 1-2 finish on the night that Toyota captured the season manufacturer title on the strength of Mike Skinner’s third-place finish. Last year: Todd Bodine raced off to his second truck win in a row at Phoenix International Raceway. Fast facts: Bodine stretched his points lead from 86 to 137 over Johnny Benson, who didn’t finish a race for the first time this season because of a mechanical problem. Bodine has the championship lead for the 19th straight week, breaking the record 18 consecutive weeks by Ron Hornaday Jr. in 1996. … David Reutimann (165 points behind) and Ted Musgrave (262) remained 3-4 in the points, and are the only other drivers still with a mathematical chance of winning the season title. … Bowyer is the 12th driver to win in the series this year, but joined Benson as the only first-time winners in 2006. Next race: Ford 200, Nov. 17, Homestead, Fla.
