Pair cited by Hispanic Recognition Program

Two Spokane high school students were identified recently as outstanding students by the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program.

Matthew Rivera, a senior at Rogers High School, and AJ Garcia, a senior at Lewis and Clark, are among 3,300 students identified as the highest scoring Hispanic students out of 124,000 who took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test or National Merit Qualifying Test.

Each year the NHRP identifies those students and shares their information and academic success with colleges and universities.

Qualification is based on the student’s combined verbal, math and writing scores on the PSAT and qualifying test as juniors. Students must also self-identify themselves as Hispanic.

The adaptation will address marriage values across different cultures, Pschirrer said.

Mead students recognized

Two seniors from Mt. Spokane High School were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship program for scores on the 2005 Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Nathan Bouscal was named National Merit Semifinalist and will go on to compete for one of thousands of scholarship awards next spring. The scholarships are worth about $33 million.

Shetha Alaskar was named a Commended Student by the program for her exceptional academic efforts. Although she will not compete for the scholarships, Commended students are those placed among the top 5 percents of more than 1.4 million students who took the PSAT nationwide.

Ferris all-nighter fundraiser

The parents of the senior class at Ferris High School will hold a holiday plant sale to raise money for the senior all-nighter.

The all-nighter is an alcohol- and drug-free celebration held for graduates after commencement ceremonies each year.

The parents of the class of 2007 will be selling 4-, 6-, and 8-inch poinsettias in red, white, pink, marble and jingle bell. The plants, from Colby’s Greenhouse, are $6, $12 and $20.

Students in the Ferris horticulture department also will be providing 14-inch evergreen wreaths for $13, holiday centerpieces for $14 and cedar garlands for $20.

Orders may be placed through Wednesday by calling 448-5642 or 448-2688.

Purchases must be picked up on Dec. 7 between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the school cafeteria, 3020 E. 37th Ave. Any orders over $100 will be delivered for free.
