Donations boost skate park effort

Christopher Rodkey Staff writer

The town of Fairfield’s quest to build its own skate park got a big bump recently when it received a major donation.

The Bank of Fairfield donated $5,000 to the project, which has been raising money since 2002. The Rockford Lions Club also donated $1,000, bringing the total amount raised to $30,000, said skate park advocate Ann Cowley.

That leaves $16,000 more for the skate park to raise before ground can be broken, hopefully before June of next year, Cowley said.

“It’s been a long process, but with the goal not being so far away, we can get another few donations, and we’ll be there,” Cowley said.

Many of the young people involved in helping to get the skate park started have already left the community, but other teens have become involved, Cowley said.

The skate park was envisioned in 2002 to give Fairfield youth an area to congregate and engage in sport. A committee has been raising funds for the park and is currently working with the town to write municipal grants that may raise more funds.

More than 33 citizen volunteers have already signed up to help build the park once the funds are raised, Cowley said.

Anyone interested in donating can send funds to P.O. Box 416, Fairfield, WA, 99012.
