Speakers and workshops

“Call to Action Spokane is presenting “What Will We Say Next,” the second in its three-part discussion series, “Speaking Our Truth,” on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church Parish Hall, 219 E. Rockwood Blvd.

Those attending will break into small groups to discuss ways to express grief or embarrassment and ask questions of the church.

“The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., is hosting a five-week nondenominational meditation workshop beginning on Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

It’s based on the teachings of Sri Eknath Easwaran, the founder of the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation. For more information visit http://easwaran.org.

Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard St., is presenting “The Explorers: Spiritual Discovery and Support” every Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.

Giving thanks

With Thanksgiving just days away, many churches are planning to give back to their communities and give thanks for their many blessings.

St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Gonzaga University and Sodexho Campus Services are presenting a community Thanksgiving dinner from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Globe Room of Cataldo Hall on the corner of Boone and Astor.

“ The Interfaith Council is offering its annual Thanksgiving service, “Being Grateful,” on Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Aloysius Church, 330 E. Boone Ave.

The service will include stories, songs and dance from several religious traditions. People from all faiths are invited.

Attendees are asked to bring a nonperishable food item for the Second Harvest Food Bank, and a free-will offering will be taken. For more information, call (509) 329-1410.

“The Metaline Falls Congregational United Church of Christ, 101 Fifth Ave. W., Metaline Falls, Wash., is offering its annual Thanksgiving prayer service Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The service will include hymns, scripture and prayer. It will be an ecumenical gathering, so all faiths are invited.

First Church of Christ, Scientist, 310 E. 14th Ave., is offering its annual Thanksgiving Day service Thursday at 10 a.m.

The church has been presenting this service for more than 100 years. It will feature a Bible lesson, the national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, prayer and hymns, and members of the congregation will offer words of gratitude.

Spokane Neighborhood Action Programs and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 1703 N. Washington St., are preparing to hand out “sack dinners” for the Thanksgiving holiday and are looking for volunteers.

The meals will be prepared today from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the church. Anyone involved with the food preparation must be up-to-date with food safety training available through the Spokane Regional Health District.

On Thursday, participants will get ready to distribute the meals at the church from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the dinners will be distributed from 2 to 5:30 p.m. at First Avenue and Jefferson Street.

Special services

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 316 E. 24th Ave., is presenting a hymn festival Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 a.m.

The festival will celebrate the arrival of “Evangelical Lutheran Worship,” the new Lutheran hymnal.

The services will include music from Carol Miyamoto on the organ, Dan Keberle and Andy Plamondon on trumpet, Tom Molter and Melinda Keberle on trombone, and Marty Zyskowski on percussion.

Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., is presenting a Ho-on-ko service Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

The service is dedicated to the Jodo Shinshu tradition’s founding father, Shinran Shonin. Families are invited to bring their children for Dharma school classes.

Festivals and bazaars

“The Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside Ave., is presenting the Cathedral Harvest Festival this weekend.

There’s a family fun day today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a boutique bazaar and bake sale from 2 to 7 p.m. Admission to the family fun day is a donation or a can of food.

The bazaar and bake sale will continue Sunday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. There also will be a French toast brunch for $5 for adults and $3 for kids.

“The Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Eiram Court 62, is holding a bazaar today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, 7315 N. Wall St.
