Katie Appleton scored 14 of her team-high 16 points in the second half as Washington State beat Sacramento State 79-65 in a non-conference women’s basketball game Friday in Pullman.

Kate Benz added 14 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars (1-2), who outrebounded the Hornets 36-31.

Kim Sheehy led Sacramento State (1-2) with 17 points.

“Senior guard Joanna Chadd scored 24 points to guide Eastern Washington to a 96-57 non-conference win over Corban.

Chadd, the Big Sky Conference co-Defensive Player of the Year last season, made 6 of 9 3-pointers and also had four steals.

Leah Gonnella added 15 points for the Eagles (3-0).

“Katie Gearlds scored a game-high 31 points to guide No. 12 Purdue to an 88-64 win over Washington in West Lafayette, Ind.

Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton added 13 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks for the Boilermakers (4-0).

Andrea Plouffe led Washington (0-2) with 16 points and Cameo Hicks added 13.

“Susan McDaniel scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Whitworth past UC Santa Cruz 64-43 at the Tip-Off Tournament in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Alida Bower added 12 points and 12 rebounds for the Pirates (1-0), who outscored the Slugs 42-26 in the second half.

Kayleigh Calandri led UCSC (0-1) with 17 points.

“Emily Wittkopf scored a game-high 23 points to lead Community Colleges of Spokane to a 63-49 win over Big Bend Community College at the Eastern Region Tip-Off Tournament in Wenatchee.

CCS held a one-point lead at halftime but broke away in the second half, outscoring the Vikings 36-23.

Abby Hatten added nine points and five rebounds for the Sasquatch (1-0).

Heather Burke led Big Bend (0-1) with 10 points and six rebounds.
