Freshman Kevin Durant scored 29 points Friday night as No. 19 Texas held on to a 77-76 victory over St. John’s in the third-place game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Durant, who had 10 rebounds, has scored at least 20 points in every game for the Longhorns (3-1).

Texas won a close one after losing to Michigan State on a driving basket with 2.4 seconds to play. This time, they weren’t assured of the win until the Red Storm’s (2-2) Anthony Mason Jr. missed a long 3-point attempt with 1 second left.

Freshman D.J. Augustin, who finished with 17 points and seven assists, gave Texas the lead for good at 75-73 with two free throws with 1:55 to play.

(4) Pittsburgh 78, Northeastern 52: At Pittsburgh, Aaron Gray overpowered undersized Northeastern for 24 points and 14 rebounds despite sitting out much of the second half and the Panthers (3-0) became the second Big East team to rout the Huskies (0-2) in three days.

(10) Alabama 71, Middle Tennessee 62: At Charlotte Amalie, U.S. Virgin Islands, Ronald Steele led the short-handed Crimson Tide (2-0) past the Blue Raiders (1-2) in the opening round of the Paradise Jam tournament.

Steele had 20 points and four assists for Alabama, which played without starting center Jermareo Davidson who was stateside mourning the death of his girlfriend.

(5) Ohio St. 74, Eastern Kentucky 45: At Columbus, Ohio, freshman Daequan Cook came off the bench to hit his first seven shots, finishing with 22 points to lead the Buckeyes (4-0) over the Colonels (2-1).

Cook scored 12 points in his first 7 minutes then added five more in a 20-2 run that put Ohio State up 35-17.

(7) LSU 96, Nicholls State 42: At Baton Rouge, La., Darnell Lazare scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the Tigers (1-0) win over the Colonels (0-5).

Three other LSU players scored in double figures. Glen Davis and Garrett Temple each had 16 points, while Tasmin Mitchell added 14.

(12) Texas A&M 94, Lamar 60: At College Station, Texas, Joseph Jones scored 19 points to lead the Aggies (2-0) to a win over the Cardinal (1-1) in the inaugural Shelby Metcalf Classic.

Josh Carter had 14 points and Dominique Kirk and Antanas Kavaliauskas added 12 each for Texas A&M, which jumped out to a 30-5 lead.

(21) Connecticut 88, Central Arkansas 59: At Hartford, Conn., freshman Jerome Dyson scored 20 points and the Huskies (2-0) routed the Bears (1-2) in the opening round of the Hispanic College Fund Classic.

Jeff Adrien had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies, who had five players score in double figures.

(22) Kentucky 79, Missippi Valley State 56: At Lexington, Ky., Ramel Bradley had a career-high 21 points as the Wildcats (2-0) started with a 15-0 run to bury the Delta Devils (0-3) in their final tuneup before the Maui Invitational.

Tubby Smith was victorious in his 500th game as a college coach. Smith improved to 367-133.
