To our readers
The black and white staff photograph of wild turkeys at Mountain View Middle School published in Wednesday’s newspaper was poorly adjusted during the production process, but the content of the original photo was not altered.
The black and white tones in newspaper photographs are routinely adjusted in order to produce the clearest reproduction possible. The application of ink to newsprint during a press run darkens images, so photos are toned – or lightened – prior to the press run to compensate for the ink.
A prepress department technician incorrectly toned the turkey photo. As a result, it appeared to have been crudely doctored.
We’re printing the original photo today so that readers can see the unaltered version.
