Toronto routs Washington

The Toronto Maple Leafs scored twice in the opening three minutes, then added three goals during a 60-second span of the second period and cruised past the skidding Washington Capitals 7-1 Friday night at Washington.

Toronto led 2-1 before former Spokane Chief Bryan McCabe scored at 10:09 of the second period with the Maple Leafs enjoying a two-man advantage. Jeff O’Neill scored another power-play goal 14 seconds later, and Hal Gill concluded the rapid-fire barrage against Capitals goaltender Brent Johnson at 11:09.

Darcy Tucker added his team-high 16th goal just over three minutes later for a 6-1 lead.

Hurricanes 5, Bruins 1: At Boston, Justin Williams and Erik Cole scored goals five seconds apart in the second period, lifting Carolina to a victory over Boston.

Eric Staal netted his team-leading 14th goal for Carolina.

Flyers 3, Blue Jackets 2: At Philadelphia, Mike Richards scored his first goal of the season early in the third period, helping Philadelphia beat Columbus.

Peter Forsberg and Freddy Meyer added goals for the Flyers.

Minnesota 4, Phoenix 0: At St. Paul, Minn., Niklas Backstrom recorded his first NHL shutout and Minnesota scored three special-team goals to beat Phoenix.

Pierre-Marc Bouchard and Branko Radivojevic scored power-play goals.

Islanders 3, Penguins 1: At Uniondale, N.Y., Miroslav Satan had a goal and assist, and Rick DiPietro stopped 35 shots in New York’s victory over Pittsburgh.

Evgeni Malkin spoiled DiPietro’s shutout bid in the third period with his 11th goal.

Ducks 4, Devils 2: At Anaheim, Calif., Todd Marchant scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period while Anaheim was short-handed and added an empty-netter, leading the Ducks to a win over New Jersey.

Blues 3, Red Wings 2 (SO): At Detroit, Martin Rucinsky and Doug Weight scored in the shootout to put St. Louis over Detroit.

St. Louis goalie Manny Legace stopped Jason Williams on his attempt and Pavel Datsyuk hit the goal post.

Petr Cajanek scored twice for the Blues.

Lightning 3, Thrashers 2 (OT): At Tampa, Fla., Martin St. Louis scored with 2:35 left in overtime as Tampa Bay overcame a two-goal deficit to post a victory over Atlanta.

Jason Krog and Steve Rucchin had the Atlanta goals.

Canadiens 2, Sabres 1 (OT): At Buffalo, N.Y., defenseman Sheldon Souray scored with one second left in overtime, lifting Montreal to a come-from-behind victory over Buffalo.

Saku Koivu, who tied the game eight minutes into the third period, also had an assist, and Cristobal Huet stopped 29 shots.

Senators 6, Panthers 4: At Sunrise, Fla., Dany Heatley had three goals and Jason Spezza scored the winner to send Ottawa over Florida.

Dean McAmmond and Mike Fisher added goals for the Senators.

Stars 5, Kings 3: At Dallas, defenseman Philippe Boucher scored three power-play goals for his first career hat trick, leading Dallas to a win over Los Angeles.

Rookie goalie Mike Smith stopped 22 shots for the Stars.

Oilers 5, Blackhawks 1: At Edmonton, Alberta, Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist to help the Oilers rout Chicago.

Jarret Stoll, Marty Reasoner, Raffi Torres and Marc-Andre Bergeron also scored for the Oilers.
