THE SLICE

If you find yourself called upon to help a child write a letter to Santa, keep a few things in mind.

Exclamation points do not impress Santa!

Threats are the wrong way to go.

It never hurts to point out that you live at an easily accessed northern latitude.

If the child in question has, in fact, been naughty as all get-out, an honest expression of contrition could be in order.

Alluding to the child’s public service volunteering is OK, but don’t overdo it. This isn’t a college application.

Suggest cutting the gift list in half.

It’s never wise to send cash through the mail.

Inquiring about the well-being of Mrs. Claus is a bit phony, but it never hurts.

Complaining about last year’s haul is always a bad idea.
