Blue Devils hang on
DeMarcus Nelson scored 19 points Tuesday night as No. 11 Duke held on to beat Indiana 54-51 in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge in Durham, N.C.
Freshman Jon Scheyer had 10 points for the Blue Devils (6-1), who extended their non-conference home winning streak to 45 games and remained the only unbeaten team in the eight-year history of the challenge.
The win also gave Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski his 759th career victory, tying him with Western Kentucky’s Ed Diddle for 10th on the all-time list.
Freshman Armon Bassett scored 16 points to lead the Hoosiers (3-2), who rallied from a 12-point halftime deficit and had to fight for just about every basket while putting quite a scare into the Blue Devils.
(1) UCLA 88, Long Beach St. 58: At Los Angeles, Josh Shipp scored a career-high 24 points, Arron Afflalo added 20 and the Bruins defeated the 49ers in their first game as the nation’s No. 1 team since 1995.
The Bruins (5-0) hit 13 3-pointers, led by Shipp’s career-high six, and Russell Westbrook’s 3 of 3 from long-range.
Sterling Byrd led Long Beach State (2-3) with career highs of 15 points and 16 rebounds.
(4) Florida 83, Southern 27: At Gainesville, Fla., Al Horford scored 12 points, Walter Hodge added nine in place of Corey Brewer and the Gators rebounded from their first loss with a rout against the winless Jaguars (0-6).
Brewer, the team’s best defender and most versatile player, sat out with mononucleosis and could miss several more games while recovering from the viral infection.
Brewer, averaging 11.7 points and 4.3 rebounds, was initially diagnosed with the flu last week when the defending national champion Gators (7-1) played Western Kentucky and Kansas at the Las Vegas Invitational.
(5) Kansas 83, Dartmouth 32: At Lawrence, Kan., Darrell Arthur and Darnell Jackson each scored 13 points to help the Jayhawks thump the Big Green, handing Dartmouth (0-6) one of its worst losses.
Just three days after beating then-top-ranked Florida in the Las Vegas Invitational, the Jayhawks (6-1) enjoyed complete dominance over the Big Green.
The Dartmouth sports information office listed the Big Green’s last 50-point margin of defeat as a 107-36 rout by New Mexico in 1972.
(6) Alabama 75, Louisiana-Monroe 61: At Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mykal Riley and Alonzo Gee each scored 22 points and the Crimson Tide rallied for a win over the Warhawks (3-4).

(12) Wisconsin 81, Florida St. 66: At Madison, Wis., Alando Tucker scored 22 points, including 18 after being poked in the eye, and the Badgers beat the Seminoles in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
The Badgers (6-1) took advantage in a physical game by capitalizing on sloppy play by Florida State (4-2), which turned the ball over 21 times.
(16) Arizona 89, UNLV 75: At Tucson, Ariz., Ivan Radenovic scored a career-high 27 points and Marcus Williams added 24 to help the Wildcats beat the Runnin’ Rebels (4-2).

(21) Georgia Tech 77, Penn State 73: At Atlanta, Lewis Clinch scored 20 points and Anthony Morrow’s late free throws sealed the Yellow Jackets’ victory over the Nittany Lions in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.
The Yellow Jackets (6-1), coming off an 88-73 loss to UCLA in the title game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational last week, never put away Penn State after Jeremis Smith’s 5-footer gave them a 69-61 lead with 3:24 remaining.
Jamelle Cornley led the Nittany Lions (4-2) with 20 points.
(23) Maryland 72, Illinois 66: At Champaign, Ill., Mike Jones scored 19 points to help the Terrapins beat the Illini in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge and end Illinois’ 51-game home-court winning streak against non-conference opponents.
The Terrapins (8-0) blew a 15-point lead before recovering to beat the Illini as freshman Greivis Vasquez scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half.
Maryland played without 6-foot-9 Ekene Ibekwe, their strong shot blocker averaging 12 points and seven rebounds, who was sidelined by an ankle injury.
Illinois (7-1), which last lost at home against a non-conference team in 1998, had 18 points from Shaun Pruitt.
