Spurrier honored
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, still the most prominent figure in Florida football history, was back in his old stamping grounds for the second time in a month Saturday – honored again as part of the Gators’ 100 years of football celebration.
Spurrier returned to Florida Field four weeks ago when the school recognized the team he led to the school’s only national championship in 1996.
This time, he joined Emmitt Smith, Danny Wuerffel and Jack Youngblood as the inductees in the Florida Ring of Honor.
Record-tying kick
Alexis Serna sent a 58-yard field goal through the uprights in California’s 41-13 rout of the Oregon State Beavers. The kick matched the school record set by Chris Mangold against San Jose State in 1982.
Big win
Jason Reda’s 39-yard field goal with 6 seconds remaining lifted Illinois to its first Big Ten win since 2004, a 23-20 victory over struggling Michigan State. The Illini snapped a 10-game conference losing streak and nine straight to the Spartans.
Rocky Mountain low
Colorado has dropped nine straight, after a 28-13 loss to No. 25 Missouri. The losing streak is Colorado’s longest since a 10-game slide during the 1963 and 1964 seasons.
The Buffaloes are ranked 113th in offense with just 223.5 yards per game.
Overtime classic
Niles Rainey raced 98 yards with a fumbled two-point conversion attempt in the fourth overtime to give Virginia Union a 55-53 victory over Central State.
Streaking Cougars
St. Francis of Indiana survived five fumbles and an interception, and a 3-yard touchdown run by Doug Wasylk with 39 seconds left gave the Cougars their 45th straight regular-season victory, 21-17 over Ohio Dominican.
St. Francis, the NAIA national runner-up the past two years, won its 33rd straight home game and 28th straight in the Mid-States Mideast League.
Army injury
Army senior Ricky Lay was taken by ambulance to a campus hospital after being injured while returning a kickoff late in a loss to Rice at West Point, N.Y.
The extent of his injury was not immediately clear. Michie Stadium was silent for 10 minutes as medical personnel attended to Lay on the field. Lay was taken to Keller Army Hospital at West Point.
