Forsberg lifts Flyers over Rangers
Peter Forsberg had a goal and two assists, and the Philadelphia Flyers beat the New York Rangers 4-2 Tuesday night in New York for their first victory of the season.
New York, which won a 13-round shootout in Philadelphia on Saturday, lost for the first time.
Antero Niittymaki bounced back from the weekend loss and made 25 saves for the Flyers. Marcel Hossa won Saturday’s shootout with the only goal in the lengthy tiebreaker.
In the rematch, Simon Gagne tipped Forsberg’s right-circle feed under Henrik Lundqvist’s pads on a 5-on-3 power play for his third goal of the season at 12:25 of the second period that made it 4-1.
Wild 2, Canucks 1 (SO): At St. Paul, Minn., Manny Fernandez made 30 saves, and Petteri Nummelin beat Roberto Luongo with a nifty double-move backhander in the shootout to give Minnesota a victory over Vancouver.
Kings 4, Islanders 2: At Los Angeles, Brent Sopel’s power-play goal with 6 seconds left in the second period helped the Kings top New York. Oleg Tverdovsky and Craig Conroy assisted on the game-winning goal.
