This week’s events

All times PDT

NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Bank of America 500

Site: Concord, N.C. Schedule: Thursday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 4 p.m.); Saturday, race (NBC, 4 p.m.). Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 501 miles, 334 laps. Last race: Brian Vickers stole his first Cup victory by nudging teammate Jimmie Johnson into race leader Dale Earnhardt Jr., then skirting by the two spinning cars on the last lap at Talladega Superspeedway. The wreck dropped Earnhardt to a 23rd-place finish, Johnson to 24th and prevented either from making any gains in the Chase for the championship. Although Jeff Burton’s lead was cut to six points over Matt Kenseth, Earnhardt is 106 back in sixth place and Johnson is 156 out in eighth place. Fast facts: Only 51 points separate the top five drivers in the standings, the closest margin after four events in the Chase’s three-year history. … Johnson has five wins in 10 career starts at Lowe’s, while Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin have four wins apiece. … Kasey Kahne won the Coca-Cola 600 at Concord on May 28. … David Reutimann, a truck series regular this season, will move up to the Nextel Cup series in 2007 with the new Michael Waltrip Racing team. Reutimann will join Waltrip and Dale Jarrett on the three-car Toyota team. Next race: Subway 500, Oct. 22, Martinsville, Va.

NASCAR BUSCH

Dollar General 300

Site: Concord, N.C. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 2 p.m.), race (TNT, 5 p.m.). Track: Lowe’s Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Not much more than a few formalities stand between Kevin Harvick and his second Busch championship, after he held off Matt Kenseth in a green-white-checkered shootout at Kansas Speedway. Harvick’s victory in a caution-filled Yellow Transportation 300 also made him the first Busch driver to win seven races in a season since Dale Earnhardt Jr. did it en route to the 1998 title. Harvick had five victories when he won the title in 2001. Fast facts: Harvick will clinch the title if he gains at least 32 points on the second-place driver — currently Carl Edwards — in this event. He has been atop the standings since the second race of the season. … Edwards won the Carquest Auto Parts 300 at Lowe’s on May 27. … Larry Person clinched his second consecutive Busch championship at the 1987 event.

NHRA

NHRA Nationals

Site: Richmond, Va. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 7:30 a.m. (ESPN2, 7 p.m., tape); Sunday, eliminations, 8 a.m. (ESPN2, 4 p.m., tape). Track: Virginia Motorsports Park. Last event: Rookie J.R. Todd raced to his third Top Fuel victory, using a career-best pass of 4.494 seconds to beat Melanie Troxel in the final of the Toyo Tires NHRA Nationals. Phil Burkart snapped a 53-race winless streak in Funny Car. Three-time Pro Stock champ Greg Anderson also won, while Karen Stoffer topped the Pro Stock Motorcycle field. Fast facts: The event was rescheduled from last weekend because of rain. … The series returns to Virginia for the first time since 2000.
