Former Michigan coach Schembechler in hospital

The Spokesman-Review

Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler was admitted to an Ann Arbor hospital’s cardiac-care unit for observation Friday in Detroit after he felt ill at the taping of a weekly television show.

“He is in good condition,” spokesman Bruce Madej said, relaying a statement from the University of Michigan health system. “No more information will be released this evening, and the Schembechlers will not be giving interviews.”

Schembechler had a heart attack on the eve of his first Rose Bowl in 1970, and another one in 1987.

“In the wake of two on-field college football brawls a week ago, the president of the NCAA said the responsibility of preventing future outbreaks and instilling a real sense of sportsmanship rests with individual institutions.

“It’s disappointing to see violence in college football games,” Dr. Myles Brand said during a panel discussion at the State University of New York at Oswego on the impact of media on sports in the United States.

“The NCAA from the national office can’t police all those sites. The handling of individual incidents is properly the job of the local college or university.”

“A former college punter charged with attempted murder in a knife attack on a rival has until Monday to surrender to authorities, prosecutors said from Greeley, Colo.

Mitchell Cozad, who was a backup punter at the University of Northern Colorado, is accused of stabbing starter Rafael Mendoza in his kicking leg last month.
