WSU women take down California
Washington State women’s soccer upset No. 18 California Sunday as the Cougars blanked the Bears 2-0 in Pac-10 play at Pullman, Wash.
The victory marks the Cougars’ first win over California since 2002 and brings WSU’s record to 8-5-3 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.
Allison Scurich scored at the 18:03 mark to open up the scoring and just seconds later, at the 18:22 mark, Kiersten Dallstream scored from 18 yards out to put the Cougars up 2-0.
From there solid defense allowed WSU to secure its fourth shutout in five conference matches.
•Chelsey Hannesson scored the only goal for the Eagles in the first half, but Eastern Washington fell 5-1 to league-leading Idaho State in Pocatello, Idaho.
Hannesson’s goal came in the 32nd minute for the Eagles (5-12-1, 1-5-0) and was unassisted.
•Nanda McCormick continued her four-match goal-scoring streak but Gonzaga lost to Santa Clara 6-2 at Santa Clara, Calif.
The Bulldogs (9-7-1, 3-20) were outshot 21-7.
•Kelly Baker headed in a corner kick in the 84th minute to lift Whitworth to a 2-1 comeback victory over visiting Linfield.
The Pirates (11-2-2, 8-2-1 NWC) faced a 1-0 halftime deficit, but Jael Hegerott evened things up with a score in the 47th minute before Baker completed the comeback.
•Idaho ended its 17-match losing streak with a 1-1 draw at Boise State.
The Broncos struck early with a goal in the 11th minute but the Vandals scored the equalizer in the 56th minute on a goal by Eija Hodgin.
•The University of Washington (6-10, 1-4 Pac-10) fell 2-0 to Stanford in Seattle.
Men’s Soccer
Loyola Marymount University stunned Gonzaga University with three goals in the first 6:48 and the Bulldogs never recovered in a 4-1 WCC setback at Martin Field.

•Skye Henderson’s goal just over a minute into overtime lifted Whitworth to a 1-0 win over visiting Linfield.
The Pirates (9-3-3, 8-1-2) moved three points ahead of Puget Sound for the conference lead.
•Ely Allen and George John netted goals in the first 18 minutes to lead Washington (10-5-1, 3-5-1 Pac-10) to a 2-0 shutout of UCLA at Husky soccer field in Seattle.
Rowing
Washington State women’s varsity eight rowing crew finished 10th at the 42nd Annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
The Cougars finished with a time of 16 minutes, 38.652 seconds, just over a minute behind the first place U.S. Rowing boat. WSU crossed the finish line eighth among collegiate boats rowing in the event.
•The University of Washington men finished in second place at the Head of the Charles, trailing only the U.S. National Team. They finished the course in 14:21.917, three seconds ahead of third place Yale.
The Husky women took sixth place, posting a time of 16:34.304.
Golf
The Washington State women finished 11th and Washington 15th at the Stanford Intercollegiate, held at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.
•Whitworth men’s golf placed second in the NWC Fall Classic at the Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Ore. Linfield College took first.
Junior Hockey
The Spokane Braves fell to Beaver Valley 4-3 in Spokane. The Braves are now 11-5-2.
