Riley says he’ll play for Eastern

The Eastern Washington men’s basketball team received an oral commitment from 6-foot-8 wing Kaylone Riley, who has transferred from Mt. Hood Community College to Phoenix (Ariz.) College for his sophomore season. Riley marks the third such commitment this fall.

A native of Las Vegas, Riley averaged about 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks for Mt. Hood.

Eastern picked up commitments earlier from Trey Gross, a 6-3 guard from Stockton, Calif., and 6-10 post Nathan Lozeau from Marysville-Pilchuck.

The commitments aren’t official until the week-long early signing period next month.

Golf

Community Colleges of Spokane men and women both earned victories at the Tacoma Community College Invitational.

Tyler Morris finished fourth with a 4-over-par 148 at Hawks Prairie Golf Course in Lacey, Wash., for the Sasquatch, who shot 599 as a team to beat runner-up Bellevue by two strokes. Teammate Jason Azzarito (150) placed fifth. Bellevue’s Richard Lee and Skagit Valley’s Brian Baltzer tied for medalist honors with 144s.

The women carded a 529 team total on the same course and finished 16 strokes ahead of runner-up Skagit Valley. No Sasquatch scores were available. Kaitlin Parker of Skagit Valley won medalist honors with a 159.

“Whitworth’s women placed fourth in the Northwest Fall Classic at the par-72 Tokatee Golf Course in Blue River, Ore.

Alicia Bratlien and Krystal Pitkonen each carded 169s to tie for seventh place for Whitworth. The Pirates shot 694 as a team, just five shots behind winner Willamette, who was led by medalist Whitney Ueno (152).

Volleyball

Carly Ross smacked 17 kills to lead visiting Columbia Basin College to a 27-30, 30-28, 30-24, 30-11 NWAACC victory over CC Spokane.

Ashlee Lupfer paced the Sasquatch with 11 kills. Columbia Basin improves to 9-0 in league play, while CC Spokane falls to 5-6.

Girls soccer

Annie Weisbeck took a pass from Justine Bowman and scored the lone goal of the match 5 minutes into the second half to lift visiting Central Valley to a 1-0 victory over Gonzaga Prep in a District 8 loser-out contest. The Bears advance to a second-round match against Shadle Park on Wednesday at Joe Albi Stadium.

In the other loser-out match, Chrissii Almquist scored 3 minutes into the second half to propel Shadle Park to a 2-1 victory over visiting University. Rachel Lopez staked the Titans to a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 8 minutes into the match. Nicole Ervin pulled the Highlanders even with a goal in the 39th minute.

“Kellie Zakrzewski booted a game-tying goal in the 71st minute and Kaitlyn Proctor added the game-winner eight minutes later to send visiting Cheney to a 2-1 victory over Lakeside in Great Northern League play. Jacy Fitzpatrick scored in the 52nd minute, with an assist from Callie Paul, to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The game was moved up a day because Lakeside travels to Tonasket on Wednesday to begin 1A regional play.
