Cheney captures No. 1 seed
Girls soccer
Kellie Zakrzewski scored both of Cheney’s goals as the Blackhawks blanked West Valley 2-0 in the championship game of the Great Northern League playoffs at Central Valley High School.
Kendra Reynolds and Molly McClure both had assists for Cheney. The Blackhawks (14-2) are the No. 1 seed entering the District 7 2A tournament and the Eagles (11-6) are No. 2.
In other tournament action, Cory Druffel scored two goals to guide Pullman to a 3-0 win over Deer Park. Jessica Thomas also scored for the Greyhounds off an assist from Katie Spangenberg in the 72nd minute. Pullman outshot the Stags 15-2. The Greyhounds (15-2) will be the No. 3 seed and Deer Park (6-10) is No. 4. … Corlynn Hiller scored off an assist from Tabby Grow in the 30th minute to give Riverside a 1-0 win over Clarkston. Amanda Sturm made seven saves for the Rams. Riverside (6-10) advances to district. Clarkston (3-12) is finished for the season. … Janelle Rainer had a goal and an assist to guide Colville to a 3-0 win over Medical Lake. Carly Gauche also had a goal and an assist for the Indians, who outshot the Cardinals (2-13) 14-4. Colville (7-7) advances to the district playoffs, while Medical Lake’s season is finished.
Swimming
Two Pullman athletes won two individual events each at the District 5-6-7 swimming and diving championships in Ellensburg. Hanna Connet won the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle, and Kylie Shaw won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. Cheney score three individual wins and a relay victory.
Junior hockey
Kevin Ogle, Brandon Lassiter and Lane Bitz scored goals to guide the host Spokane Braves past the Castlegar Rebels 3-2 in a KIJHL game at Eagles Ice-A-Rena.
Evan Witt contributed two assists for Spokane. Braves goaltender Jason Greenwell made 40 saves.
Kenny Anglin and Cody Connatty scored for the Rebels.
Spokane plays at 2 p.m. today against visiting Nelson.
