1. Phoenix Suns

Outlook: Phoenix’s success last season proved that not all depends on Amare Stoudemire, who is returning from microfracture knee surgery. But it’s hard to imagine the Suns making another deep playoff run unless their interior defense improves – with or without Stoudemire.

Projected starters: G Steve Nash; G Raja Bell; F Boris Diaw; F Shawn Marion; C Amare Stoudemire

2. Los Angeles Clippers

Outlook: The Clippers are strong at each position in the starting lineup. Age is a concern with Sam Cassell and Cuttino Mobley. Elton Brand and Chris Kaman must continue to improve, another playoff berth is likely.

Projected starters: G Sam Cassell; G Cuttino Mobley; F Corey Maggette; F Elton Brand; C Chris Kaman

3. Los Angeles Lakers

Outlook: There’s more depth and lots of size. And, of course, there’s Kobe Bryant. As long as his off-season knee surgery isn’t an issue and Kwame Brown continues to improve, the Lakers have a shot at the playoffs.

Projected starters: G Smush Parker; G Kobe Bryant; F Vladimir Radmanovic; F Lamar Odom; C Kwame Brown

4. Sacramento Kings

Outlook: Mike Bibby could miss the first month of the season with a thumb injury. The Kings have enough ball-handlers and passers to make up for his absence, but not enough frontcourt size to contend in the West.

Projected starters: G Mike Bibby; G Kevin Martin; F Ron Artest; F Kenny Thomas; C Brad Miller

5. Golden State Warriors

Outlook: Coach Don Nelson should make the Warriors fun to watch with his small-ball system, but unless he can get point guard Baron Davis under control, it won’t work. So far Nelson has had nothing but good things to say.

Projected starters: G Baron Davis; G Jason Richardson; F Mike Dunleavy; F Mickael Pietrus; C Troy Murphy
