Felon dies in shootout with city, state officers
POCATELLO, Idaho – A convicted felon sought for alleged probation violations was killed Thursday in a shootout that also injured a city policeman and two Idaho Department of Correction officers.
None of the law enforcement officers suffered life-threatening injuries, said Correction spokeswoman Melinda O’Malley Keckler.
The man who died opened fire when the officers tried to arrest him around 2 p.m., the Correction Department said in a statement. It was not immediately known how many shots were fired.
The dead man was not immediately identified.
Probation and Parole Officer Jed Dayley was shot in the leg, and Probation and Parole Manager Wally Peterson was bruised, the Correction Department said. Pocatello Police Officer Mathew Shutes was also injured, the Idaho State Journal reported.
The man who died had been convicted of raping a victim younger than 18 and burglary, the Correction Department said.
Students at a nearby middle school were briefly locked inside their building but were dismissed at the normal hour, police said.
