Eastern volleyball team captures Peahen Invitational
The Eastern Washington Eagles used a pair of sweeps to capture the Peahen Invitational volleyball tournament on Friday in Jersey City, N.J.
Senior Brittney Page totaled 12 kills and a .478 hitting percentage as the Eagles (6-1) rolled past the St. Francis Terriers 30-11, 30-10, 30-10 in the semifinals and the St. Peter’s Peahens 30-26, 30-12, 30-13 in the championship match.
Chrystal Johnson added nine kills and Raelynn Chaffee chipped in with four kills, four blocks and a .667 hitting percentage for EWU.
“Adetokunbo Faleti tallied a match-high 18 kills and Corine Beyer piled up 60 assists as the Washington State Cougars (5-1) defeated the UNLV Rebels (1-3) 30-16, 30-24, 29-31, 30-25 in the Baden Cougar Challenge in Pullman.
Brittany Johnson (16), Cassie Robbins (15), Kelly Rosin (13) and Tara West (10) also finished with double-digit kills for WSU.
“The 13th-ranked Missouri Tigers (4-1) knocked off the Idaho Vandals 30-23, 30-21, 30-26 at the Shamrock Invitational tourney on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Ind.
Lauren Mathis paced the Vandals, who fell to 0-4 on the season, with five kills and a .556 hitting percentage.
“Kate Seabaugh had a match-high 16 kills to lead the Connecticut Huskies (2-0) to a 30-17, 30-25, 30-27 victory over the Gonzaga Bulldogs (1-4) at the Gonzaga Invitational.
Briawna Mueller and Becky Jones topped the Bulldogs, who were playing Big East Conference member UConn for the first time, with nine kills.
In the tourney’s other match, Portland State (2-1) beat Gardner-Webb (0-4) 30-20, 30-24, 30-22).
“Angie Florence had 16 kills and Cassie Moore totaled 20 digs to lead the Whitworth Pirates to a season-opening 30-25, 30-22, 24-30, 30-27 win over UC Santa Cruz in Salem, Ore.
Men’s soccer
David Powers scored at the 86-minute, 30-second mark to lift the visiting North Idaho Cardinals to a 1-0 victory over the Whitworth Pirates.
The match counted for NIC (2-0), but was an exhibition for the Pirates.
NIC goalkeeper Seth Baker had six saves to earn the shutout. Whitworth played a pair of goalies. Kevin Bostock saved the only shot he faced in the first half, while Derek Casanovas stopped three of four second-half shots.
“Gonzaga’s match against Maryland-Baltimore County in Annapolis, Md., was postponed until today because of inclement weather. Gonzaga, taking part in the Anders Navy Classic tourney, is still scheduled to play Navy on Sunday.
Women’s soccer
Freshman Taylor Hall scored a pair of goals to lead the Gonzaga Bulldogs (2-0-1) to a 4-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern at Martin Field.
Sarah Hall and Lacey Castleberry also scored for GU.
“Adele Letro scored in the second overtime – her second goal of the game – and the Utah Utes nipped the Washington State Cougars 2-1 at the Utah Fall Classic in Salt Lake City.
Letro scored in the 78th minutes to give the Utes (2-1) a 1-0 lead, but Carly Debratz scored an unassisted goal in the 87th minute to pull WSU (1-1-1) even.
“Kim Chantal, Tia Burns and Michelle Okumura scored goals and Kilee Quigley had two assists as Idaho State (2-2) defeated Idaho (0-3) 3-0 in a Governor’s Cup match at Boise State. The Vandals have not scored a goal this season.
Hockey
Dustin Tokarski stopped 34 of 36 shots on goal and the Spokane Chiefs breezed to a 5-2 win over the Kamloops Blazers at the Everett Silvertips preseason tourney.
Adam Hobson, Judd Blackwater and Drayson Bowman scored first-period goals for Spokane.
After Kamloops cut the lead to 3-2 early in the second period, Justin Falk netted a power-play goal to push the lead back to two.
Thomas Parker’s goal with 48 seconds remaining capped the scoring for the Chiefs. Defenseman Mike Reddington added two assists.
The Chiefs are carrying 29 players after reassigning three players – defensemen Andrew MacWilliam and Justin Lutz and forward David Conrad.
Cross country
Rhea Richter set an Idaho freshman course record in winning the Vandal Twilight Jamboree – a meet that included Washington State and Gonzaga – in Moscow.
Richter won the 4K race with a time of 15 minutes, 3.1 seconds.
WSU freshman Dan Geib, running unattached, won the men’s 4-mile race in 20:53.42.
