Capital defeats Post Falls 28-6

Jesse Zentz Idaho Statesman

Capital High’s offense didn’t miss a beat and the defense locked down Post Falls in a 28-6 non-conference win Friday at Bronco Stadium.

Quarterback Jake Poulson finished 6 of 11 for 148 yards with a touchdown and an interception to lead Capital’s offense to another impressive outing.

Capital beat Borah 37-30 last week.

Poulson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior, also ran for a touchdown.

“The coaches got us fired up, the O-line played great and the running backs ran hard,” Poulson said. “It’s that simple.”

On defense, Capital (2-0) kept Post Falls (1-1) from gaining any confidence in the second half after giving up a first-half touchdown to the Trojans.

It looked as if Capital was set to run away from Post Falls after Eagles running back Caleb Walden opened the scoring with a 5-yard TD run and Benson Manwaring followed with a 55-yard touchdown reception from Poulson to grab a 14-0 lead.

But after a three-and-out on their first series, the Trojans bounced back with a 10-play, 95-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard Levi Buckles touchdown reception from Post Falls quarterback Jake Salisbury.

Both teams went scoreless in the second quarter.

The Capital defense didn’t let Post Falls get a first down in the third quarter.

Capital defensive end Jarrell Root, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 230 pounds, had a sack and pass deflection on Post Falls’ second of two third-quarter series that ended with a three-and-out.

Post Falls produced 1 yard on eight plays in the third quarter, largely because of Capital’s time-consuming running game.
