No. 6 West Virginia routs Maryland
Steve Slaton rushed for 195 yards and the No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers forced two turnovers in a 28-0 first-quarter blitz on the way to a 45-24 victory over the Terrapins in Morgantown, W. Va., Thursday night.
Pat White threw for a TD and ran for another while Darius Reynaud scored twice, including a 96-yard kickoff return, for the Mountaineers (3-0), who extended their winning streak to 10 games, second in the nation to TCU’s 12 in a row.
With scouts from the Orange and Fiesta bowls and 15 NFL teams in attendance, West Virginia took a 38-10 halftime lead in beating Maryland (2-1) for the third straight year, the first time that has happened since 1996-98. The teams have met every year since 1980.
Baseball
Coach convicted
A Uniontown, Pa., baseball coach accused of offering an 8-year-old money to bean an autistic teammate so he couldn’t play was convicted of two lesser charges against him, and evaded more serious charges.
A jury convicted 29-year-old Mark R. Downs Jr. of corruption of minors and criminal solicitation to commit simple assault, Fayette County authorities said.
Downs was acquitted of criminal solicitation to commit aggravated assault, and jurors said they were deadlocked on a charge of reckless endangerment. The judge declared a mistrial on the endangerment charge.

New doping charges
American cyclist Tyler Hamilton faces a new doping investigation, less than two weeks before his two-year suspension for blood doping is lifted.
USA Cycling said it was contacted by UCI, which provided documents on Hamilton’s involvement in a Spanish doping scandal. The sport’s governing body also requested that USA Cycling open disciplinary proceedings against Hamilton.
“German authorities secured samples of former Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich’s DNA when they raided his Swiss residence Wednesday, according to a released report.
Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung said in an advance release of its Friday edition that authorities plan to compare the German rider’s DNA with frozen blood seized at a Madrid clinic as part of a doping investigation that forced Ullrich and eight other riders to withdraw from this year’s Tour.

Primeau retires
After being told by Philadelphia Flyers trainer Jim McCrossin that he would never medically clear the former Flyers captain to play again after multiple concussions, Keith Primeau decided to retire from hockey after a 15-year playing career.
“The Vancouver Canucks matched Ryan Kesler’s offer sheet and re-signed him, two days after the Philadelphia Flyers extended a $1.9 million offer.
“The St. Louis Blues signed free-agent right winger Radek Dvorak. Terms were not disclosed.

Jones won’t compete
Citing poor conditioning, sprinter Marion Jones pulled out of this weekend’s World Cup in Athletics in Athens and won’t race again this season.
“Washington Wizards point guard Gilbert Arenas won’t face charges for interfering while police arrested teammate Awvee Storey in Miami Beach during Memorial Day Weekend, authorities said.
