Cougs blank Vandals in women’s soccer

The Washington State women’s soccer team improved its record to 5-2-1 Sunday as the Cougars shut out Idaho 2-0 at Lower Soccer Field in Pullman. The win is the third straight victory for Washington State.

Kim Bonnes put the Cougars on the scoreboard in the sixth minute and Carly Dobratz touched in a deflection of her own shot at the 15:38 mark to give WSU the win. The Vandals (0-9-0) were out shot 10 to 5 in the loss.

•Eastern Washington hung close but lost to the Oregon Ducks 1-0 in a non-conference game in Cheney.

Tiffany Smith scored for the Ducks (4-3-0) in the 10th minute of the first half. The Eagles (1-6-1) tied the Ducks in shots but Oregon goalkeeper Emily Zaler made seven saves. Eagles keeper Tiera Como also had seven saves and is only seven away from the Eastern record.

•Gonzaga snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Utah Valley State at Martin Field.

The Bulldogs (4-3-1) got on the board early with a goal from Jamie Blanche at the 20:04 mark. After the score was tied on a goal in the second half by the Wolverines’ Natalie Hatfield, Gonzaga’s Cristin Leverson made game-winning score in the 64th minute.

•Whitworth lost for the first time this season, falling to visiting Willamette 3-1. The Pirates (3-1-1) took the early lead on Greta Thibodeau’s hard cross in the third minute of play that was mishandled and officially scored as an own-goal.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth used three goals in a four minute span of the second half to pull away for a 4-1 win over visiting Willamette. Chris Johnson scored one goal and had an assist to lead the Pirates (3-2-1) to the victory. Willamette (1-4-1) also gave up goals to Ali Seyedali, Jordan Lister and Niko Varlamos.

Men’s golf

Whitworth beat Whitman at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Walla Walla with a collective score of 310 to Whitman’s 324. The Pirates’ Andrew Parrott (73) and Sean Thompson (73) tied for low score.

Junior hockey

The Spokane Braves got a 4-3 win over visiting Summerland. Shane Davis, Lane Bitz, Andrew Christ and Andrew Vega all scored for Spokane. The Braves are in first place in the Neil Murdock Division.

Football

Whitworth (2-0) has moved up to 17th from 20th in this week’s D3football.com poll.
