No. 4 Huskies fall to No. 5 USC in volleyball

The fourth-ranked Washington volleyball team dropped its second match in as many days with a 3-1 loss to fifth-ranked USC Friday night, 28-30, 30-27, 30-21, 30-28 in Pacific-10 Conference action in Los Angeles.

The loss came one night after a five-game Huskies setback at UCLA, marking the first time the Huskies have been swept by the L.A. schools since 2003.

USC improves to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the Pac-10. Washington is 12-3, 2-2. Washington was hurt by 14 service errors.

Junior Christal Morrison led the Huskies with a match-high 21 kills, while junior Stevie Mussie added 18. UW senior All-American Courtney Thompson had 61 assists and 18 digs.

•Haley Larsen had 17 kills and Stacy Sode added a career-high 31 digs as Idaho downed Boise State 30-19, 23-30, 30-24, 30-23 in Western Athletic Conference play at Moscow.

Idaho is 3-10 overall, 2-1 in the WAC. Boise State is 7-8 and 1-2.

•Third-ranked UCLA downed Washington State in Pacific-10 action in Los Angeles, 30-17, 24-30, 30-21, 30-26, despite 17 kills by Brittany Johnson. Tara West had a match-high seven blocks for WSU.

The Bruins are 17-0 overall, 4-0 in the Pac-10. WSU is 12-6 overall, 0-4 in conference.

•Ashlee Lupfer had 17 kills as Community Colleges of Spokane downed Treasure Valley 27-31, 30-22, 30-21, 30-22 in NWAACC play at Spokane Falls Community College.

CCS (9-11, 2-3) also got seven aces and 24 assists from Miranda Gouin. TVCC is 4-9, 1-4.

•Whitworth fell to the University of Puget Sound 30-25, 30-26 and 30-17 in Northwest Conference play at Tacoma.

Holly Tomlin led Whitworth (13-3, 2-3) with 10 kills. UPS is 8-4, 3-2.

Men’s soccer

Neil Bachman’s unassisted goal from 25 yards out at the 81:51 mark lifted CCS (8-2-1, 7-1) to a 1-0 win over Highline (6-2-1, 5-2-1) in NWAACC play at SFCC. Hawk Mummey had the shutout for CCS.

•Gonzaga fell to 23rd-ranked University of San Francisco 2-1 in West Coast Conference action at San Francisco.

The Bulldogs fell to 3-5-1 overall and 0-3-0 in WCC play. The two-time defending WCC champion Dons are 6-3-1 and 1-2.

Women’s soccer

Lauren Nay had a goal and two assists as CCS topped Highline Community College 4-0 at SFCC.

CCS is 7-3 overall, 7-1 in the NWAACC. Highline is 3-5, 3-5.

•Jessie Thalman’s third shutout of the season and Cristin Leverson’s third goal of the season lifted visiting Gonzaga to a 1-0 non-conference win over Santa Barbara. Gonzaga improved to 6-4-1. Santa Barbara fell to 2-5-3.

Leverson had the lone goal of the game at the 41:58 mark.

Hockey

Brett Gorman had two goals as the Coeur d’Alene Lakers downed the Bozeman (Mont.) Ice Dogs 4-3 in overtime in a Northern Pacific Hockey League game at the KYRO rink.
