NHL: Kaberle nets winner in overtime for Maple Leafs
Tomas Kaberle scored his second goal of the game at 3:55 of overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs helped their playoff chances with a 5-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night in Toronto.
Pittsburgh’s Ryan Whitney tied it with 4 seconds left in regulation after the Penguins pulled goalie Marc-Andre Fleury for an extra skater.
Chad Kilger, Alexei Ponikarvosky and Bryan McCabe also scored for the Maple Leafs, who stayed in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, one point and one place below Montreal and the playoff cutoff. Toronto, which missed the playoffs last year, has four games left.
The Maple Leafs, who lead Carolina and the New York Islanders by three points, have won seven straight at home after starting the season 11-15-5 at the Air Canada Centre.
Flames 3, Canucks 2: At Vancouver, British Columbia, Daymond Langkow had a goal and two assists, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 32 saves as Calgary moved closer to clinching a playoff spot with a victory over the Canucks.
Kristian Huselius had a goal and an assist, and Craig Conroy also scored as the Flames remained seven points ahead of Colorado for the final Western Conference playoff spot.
Canadients 4, Sabres 3: At Montreal, Saku Koivu scored his 20th goal early in the third period, and Michael Ryder got his team-leading 27th in the first in the Canadiens’ victory over Buffalo.
Koivu scored 3:22 into the third, coming off the bench and intercepting Alex Kotalik’s clearing attempt before driving to the net and beating Ty Conklin with a shot into the top right corner that made it 4-2.
Thrashers 3, Bruins 2: At Boston, Keith Tkachuk scored the winner, Kari Lehtonen saved 25 shots, and Atlanta moved a step closer to clinching its first playoff berth with a win over the Bruins.
Avalanche 2, Wild 1: At Denver, Colorado kept its thin playoff hopes alive, beating Minnesota behind goalie Peter Budaj’s record-tying 10th win in March.
The Avalanche also tied a team record with 11 wins in a month.
Senators 5, Islanders 2: At Uniondale, N.Y., Mike Comrie scored twice, and Christoph Schubert added a goal and assist as Ottawa swept the season series from the Islanders with a win.
Dean McAmmond and Dany Heatley also scored for Ottawa, which is fighting for fourth place in the Eastern Conference.
Rangers 6, Flyers 4: At Philadelphia, Jaromir Jagr had two goals and an assist, and New York chased away goalie Martin Biron and beat the Flyers.
Thomas Pock, Martin Straka and Petr Prucha, each had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Rangers.
Lightning 5, Capitals 2: At Tampa, Fla., Vincent Lecavalier scored his 51st goal and had two assists to lead Tampa Bay past Washington.
The Lightning remained three points behind the Southeast Division-leading Atlanta Thrashers.
Ducks 3, Blues 2 (OT): At St. Louis, Andy McDonald swatted in a backhander 25 seconds into overtime for his second goal of the game, helping Anaheim spoil the Blues’ home finale with a victory.
Scott Niedermayer had a goal and assisted on the winner for the Pacific Division leaders.
Stars 4, Predators 2: At Nashville, Tenn., Stu Barnes and Mike Modano both had a goal and an assist, and Dallas got revenge where it counted by beating the Predators.
With the win, Nashville passed Detroit and moved back atop the Central Division and Western Conference standings.
