Harmon delivers for Bulldogs

Brandon Harmon threw his second consecutive complete game to lead the Gonzaga baseball team past No. 20 San Diego 6-1 Sunday in a West Coast Conference game at GU’s Washington Trust Field.

Harmon, who held the Toreros (23-12, 1-2) to two hits over the opening eight innings, earned his fourth win of the season. The junior allowed one run on four hits while striking out five.

The Bulldogs (18-15, 2-1) capped their scoring in the seventh when Ryan Wiegand hit his third home run of the year.

“Scott Suttmeier’s three-run home run in the third inning ignited the Cougar offense and Matt Way retired the final six batters for his first save of the season, as Washington State defeated California (17-14, 2-1) 9-6 in the final game of a Pacific-10 Conference series at Evans Diamond in Berkeley, Calif.

After Suttmeier’s home run, the WSU(16-12, 1-5) offense took over, scoring two runs in each of the next three innings.

“Washington rallied from 7-1 down to draw within two, but couldn’t complete the comeback as No. 16 Arizona State (23-10, 4-2) defeated the Huskies 8-5 in Pacific-10 Conference play at Seattle.

Curt Rindal led the Huskies (15-11, 4-2) at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

“Rallying for seven runs in the top if the ninth inning, Whitman (4-19, 2-10) came from behind for a 9-5 win over Whitworth in the finale of a three-game Northwest Conference series at Merkel Field.

Starter Brandon Zimmerman allowed two hits through six innings for the Pirates (9-15, 7-8).

Softball

Whitworth’s Heather Case had a career day, swatting three home runs and collecting seven RBIs, as the Pirates won both ends of doubleheader against Northwest Conference foe George Fox at Newburg, Oregon.

The Pirates (17-3, 12-0) beat the Bruins (5-17, 3-11) 13-3 in the opener (five innings) and 8-1 in the nightcap.

“Dena Tyson scored on a passed ball with two outs in the seventh, as No. 12 Washington (23-9, 1-2) upset No. 7 Arizona State (36-8, 2-1) 1-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play in Seattle.

Rowing

The Washington State women’s team had two sixth-place finishes and a fifth-place finish at the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego.

“The Gonzaga men’s and women’s rowing teams saw success Saturday with strong finishes at the NCRC Invitational hosted by Lewis & Clark College in Lake Vancouver, Wash.

The men earned three first-place finishes, while the women won all five races they entered.

Track and field

The second day of the Stanford Invitational ended Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif., with four Idaho Vandals hitting NCAA regional qualifying marks.

Melinda Owen finished third in the women’s pole vault, Mykael Bothum eighth in the women’s shot put, Bevin Kennelly 11th in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase, and Diego Moreno 14th in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase.

Women’s golf

Sadie Green earned medalist honors, shooting a two-round score of 9-over par 153, to lead CC Spokane to a first-place finish at the Treasure Valley Invitational.

Sarah Villalovoz (158) took third and Kara Winey (161) finished fourth overall for the Sasquatch.

“Alicia Bartlien finished fifth overall with a two-round score of 20-over par 166, helping Whitworth to a fourth-place finish at the Northwest Conference Women’s Spring Classic at Lakewood, Wash.

Men’s golf

Jason Azzarito shot a two-round total of three-over par 146 to finish fifth overall and help CC Spokane to a third place finish at the Treasure Valley Invitational.
