Red-hot Whitworth sweeps Puget Sound
No. 16 Whitworth swept Puget Sound (16-12, 5-11) in a Northwest Conference softball doubleheader Saturday in Tacoma.
Halley Cey, Lindsay Davis and Heather Case all hit home runs as the Pirates won the first game 7-1.
In the second game, Rachel Anderson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored as Whitworth won 5-4.
Heather Case (6-2) picked up the win for the Pirates (21-3, 16-0).
“Kristen Burtch’s solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning broke a 6-all tie and gave North Idaho a 7-6 win and a sweep of Southern Nevada (23-11, 19-9) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Memorial Field in Coeur d’Alene.
Burtch was 2 for 4 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs.
In the first game, Kelcey Cavan allowed one run on two hits while striking out nine in a complete-game effort as the Cardinals (32-15, 20-8) won 2-1.
“Walla Walla swept visiting CC Spokane in an NWAACC doubleheader. Walla Walla won the opener 12-11. Whitney Dilworth, Jackie Purser and Heather Coulter all hit home runs for the Sasquatch (8-10, 4-4) in the loss.
In the second game, Walla Walla (24-8, 9-3) scored five runs in the second and coasted to a 9-1 win.
Baseball
Braden Friesz’s RBI single in the bottom of the 11th broke a 6-all tie and gave CC Spokane (14-11, 4-3) a 7-6 win over Walla Walla (18-6, 5-2) in the first game of a NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls Community College.
The second game was called by darkness in the eighth with the score tied at 9. The game will be finished April 28 at Walla Walla Community College.
“Occidental swept visiting Whitworth in a non-conference doubleheader at Anderson Field in Los Angeles. The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to win the first game 7-6.
In the second game, Matt Anderson and Patrick Sarkissian knocked in three runs apiece as Occidental (16-15) won 6-4. Jon Whiteside finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs for the Pirates (10-17).
“Matt Hague and Ty Rasmussen each hit home runs as Washington beat UCLA 9-4 in a Pacific-10 Conference game at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles.
Nick Hagadone picked up the win for the Huskies after allowing one earned run in 5 1/3 innings of long relief.
Washington improved to 16-13 overall and 5-4 in the Pac-10, while the Bruins fell to 15-15 on the season and 5-1 in conference.

Rowing
The Washington State women’s varsity 8 and second varsity 8 topped Washington in a dual regatta at Wawawai Landing in Pullman.
The Cougars’ varsity 8 completed the course with a time of 6 minutes, 47.47 seconds, while the second varsity 8 clocked in at 6:58.65.
“The Gonzaga men’s varsity 8 finished third at the 20th annual George Washington Invitational Regatta on the Potomac River in Washington D.C.
GU finished the 2,000-meter course in 5:39.5. No. 18 Michigan (5:30.9) took first, followed by No. 16 Georgetown (5:38.7).
Track and field
Sprinter Deji Adebayo, hurdler Curtis Parish and shot putter Cortney Zappe of the Community Colleges of Spokane were winners at the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore.
Adebayo, a sophomore from Rogers, won the 100-meter dash in 10.64 seconds, while Parrish won the 400 hurdles in 53.78 and took second in the 110 hurdles in 15.64. Zappe won the women’s shot put with a toss of 42 feet, 3/4 inches.
CCS coach Ryan Weidman, competing for the Bigfoot Track Club, won the javelin with a 215-4 heave – just 11 inches longer than his pupil, sophomore Pat McCormick. Another former Sasquatch, Zack Schaefer, took the hammer with a spin of 193-9, and CCS redshirt Jennifer Bolton won the pole vault with a clearance of 11-0.
“Freezing rain shortened the schedule at the Texas Relays, but two Washington State Cougars still posted solid marks – Robert Williams taking second in the high hurdles in 14.18 and Jon Jeffreys throwing the javelin 211-6 for fifth.
