Two Chiefs play on
The hockey season continues for two more Spokane Chiefs.
For a second straight season, the New Jersey Devils have promoted defenseman Sean Zimmerman to their American Hockey League affiliate.
Zimmerman, 19, a sixth-round selection of New Jersey in 2005, will join Lowell, Mass., with four games remaining in the regular season. He played in 60 games in his fourth season with the Chiefs and helped the U.S. win a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships.
Center Ondrej Roman, 17, will play for the Czech Republic at the Under-18 World Championships beginning Thursday in Finland. Spokane’s first-round selection in the 2006 CHL Import Draft, led the Chiefs this season with 44 assists.
Last week, Derek Ryan joined Kalamazoo, Mich., of the United Hockey League.
College baseball
For the second straight week, Gonzaga junior Brandon Harmon has been honored by the West Coast Conference.
Harmon, who pitched a complete-game, two-hit shutout in a 6-0 victory over Portland as the Bulldogs swept the Pilots, was named co-pitcher of the week. It’s the fifth weekly honor for GU this season.
“Junior Jon Whiteside of Whitworth, who went 7 for 10 with two doubles, a home run, three RBIs and five runs scored in three games, was named the Northwest Conference player of the week.
Softball
Heather Case of Whitworth, who led the Pirates to a four-game sweep of Puget Sound by hitting 7 of 13 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs, is the Northwest Conference player of the week. The junior infielder-pitcher has a 16-game hitting streak.
Track and field
Washington State senior Diana Pickler was named the Pacific-10 Conference women’s track athlete of the week after winning the heptathlon at the Texas Relays with a school and Pac-10 record 6,205 points.
Pickler’s total actually grew by one point following the meet when officials revised her winning time in the 200 meters to 23.69 seconds wind-aided from 23.70. That earned her an extra point and increased her total from 6,204.
“Whitworth senior Suzy Viducich, who cleared a Northwest Conference-best 5 feet, 1 ¼ inches in the high jump at the Pelluer Invitational in Cheney, is the NWC women’s field athlete of the week.
Boys golf
Corey Meyers of Deer Park won his second straight Stag Spring Kickoff title, besting Ben Johnson of East Valley on the first playoff hole after both shot 3-over-par 75s.
Gene Baump of Riverside had a hole-in-one on the 147-yard fourth hole with a 7-iron.
EV won the team title.
