Faith and science lectures

Gonzaga University and Whitworth College are again teaming up to offer a free lecture series on the challenge of integrating faith with the scientific understanding of the universe.

The Rev. Robert Spitzer, president of Gonzaga University, will speak on “Cosmology and Creation” at 7 p.m. Monday in the Weyerhaeuser Hall on the Whitworth College campus, 300 W. Hawthorne Road.

Steve Baldner, professor of philosophy and dean of arts at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, will discuss “Medieval Views of Creation” at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Jepson Center on the Gonzaga University campus, 500 E. Boone Ave.

The final lecture on “Divine Agency and Modern Physics” will be led by William Carroll, a Thomas Aquinas Fellow in Theology and Science and a theology faculty member at the University of Oxford in England. It will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Jepson Center.

Yom HaShoah

Temple Beth Shalom will host an observance Sunday of Yom HaShoah, the international day of remembrance of the Holocaust.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the temple, 1322 E. 30th Ave. Holocaust survivor Eva Lassman will be in attendance and will help announce the winner of the first creative writing contest and compositions written by high school students. The community is invited to attend.

Benefit auction

The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist will host the annual Spring Fling luncheon, fashion show and silent auction on Friday.

The event begins at 11:30 a.m. at the cathedral, 127 E. 12th Ave. Local businesses will showcase spring fashions while attendees bid on items such as art, golf lessons and vacations.

Admission is $15. Proceeds will benefit Bishop James Waggoner’s discretionary scholarship fund.

Spring concert

The Northwest Sacred Music Chorale will perform its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. today and 2 p.m. Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Lakeside, Coeur d’Alene.

Accompanying the group will be organist John Bodinger, harpist Leslie Stratton Norris, pianist Marietta Hardy and percussionist Michael Mitchell. The featured soloist will be 12-year-old Jackson Hern of Coeur d’Alene, performing Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms” in Hebrew.

Cleanup day

Volunteers are needed for a cleanup day sponsored by the Catholic Charities Volunteer Chore Services.

The group helps low-income seniors and the disabled with yard cleanup and leaf raking. The effort will be from 8:30 a.m. to noon next Saturday. Volunteers should bring a rake and work gloves and gather in the basement of St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, 330 E. Boone Ave.

Handbell choir

The DeColores Handbell Choir will perform a concert of classical and sacred music at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave.

This is the community choir’s 17th season. Donations will be accepted.
