Terry saves day for Zags
Sophomore Mike Terry hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning Friday, giving Gonzaga a 3-2 win at Santa Clara (17-18, 4-3) in a West Coast Conference baseball game at Schott Stadium.
Ryan Wiegand opened the seventh by drawing a walk. Two outs later, Shawn Wayt singled to advance Wiegand to second before Terry’s blast put the Bulldogs ahead for good.
Josh Monroe picked up the win for Gonzaga (22-16, 5-2) after allowing two runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
•Brett Wallace and Eric Sogard both had two hits and scored two runs as No. 10 Arizona State beat Washington State (16-15, 1-6) 8-3 in a Pac-10 Conference game at Packard Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
The Sun Devils (27-10, 8-2) scored five runs in the fourth to go ahead 8-0.
Mike Leake earned the win for ASU after allowing three hits and no runs in six innings.
Softball
Casey Riedner hit a three-run home run in Yakima Valley’s five-run fourth and the Yaks topped visiting CC Spokane 6-3 in the first game of a NWAACC doubleheader in Yakima.
Melissa Pipehoff put the Sasquatch ahead 2-1 with a solo homer in the fourth before Riedner’s blast put Yakima Valley (6-20, 3-13) on top for good.
In the second game, CCS went ahead 6-1 after the first two innings and coasted to an 11-3 win. Theresa Tveit hit her third home run of the year for the Sasquatch, a solo shot in the second.
Amber Keeler finished 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBIs for CCS (11-13, 7-7).
•Southern Idaho swept visiting North Idaho (32-17, 20-10) in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Sawtooth Field in Twin Falls, Idaho.
In the first game, the Golden Eagles built a 10-1 lead after three innings and beat the Cardinals 11-3.
In the second game, Desirae Thomson allowed no runs and one hit as the Golden Eagles won 9-0.
Jalena Williams went 3 for 3 with five RBIs to lead Southern Idaho (27-23, 18-12).
•Danielle Lawrie allowed six hits and two runs while striking out 15 as No. 12 Washington (26-10, 3-3) beat No. 10 Oregon (37-6, 3-3) 7-2 in a Pac-10 game at Howe Field in Eugene, Ore.
Track and field
Five Washington State athletes reached NCAA Regional Qualifying marks at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invite at UCLA and the Mt. SAC Invitational in Walnut, Calif.
At UCLA, Jon Jeffreys won the javelin at 216 feet, 6 inches and Robert Williams had the top time in the prelims of the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 51.87 seconds. McKenzie Garberg was fifth in the hammer throw at 187-2.
At Mt. SAC, Cougars reaching NCAA RQ marks were Chris Concha (third, 3,000 steeplechase, 9:06.99) and Meghan Leonard (12th, 3,000 steeplechase, 10:36.22)
