Armenian Holocaust will be noted

St. Gregorios Syrian Orthodox Church of India, 2803 N. Lincoln St., will observe Armenian Holocaust Day on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

The event will include a lecture from James Waller, a professor at Whitworth College who has done extensive studies of genocide.

During World War I, the Ottoman Empire began to kill off Armenians, Syrians, Assyrian Christians, Greeks and Maronites.

A potluck dinner will follow the speech.

Special services

Bethany Presbyterian Church, 301 S. Freya St., will host a multifaith service Sunday at 10 a.m.

The church doesn’t have a preconceived plan about the focus of the day and doesn’t want to force a Christian perspective on the service.

Some of the topics that will be discussed include the wisdom of each tradition and how it can contribute to the world and how each tradition can contribute to peace.

The faiths that have been invited to the service include Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist and Sikh.

After the service, there will be a potluck lunch served in the fellowship hall. The church hopes that each faith will bring a traditional dish.

Bethel Church of the Nazarene, 1111 S. Thor St., will present “Israel’s Destiny” Sunday at 6 p.m.

Mark Ellick of Chosen People Ministries will speak about the nation of Israel in prophecies.

•The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, 127 E. 12th Ave., will offer a Taize service Sunday at 7 p.m.

The candlelight service will highlight the themes of peace and reconciliation.

The service will also feature the Common Ministry at Washington State University and its music director, the Rev. Robert Hicks.

Concerts

•The Whitworth Orchestra will offer its spring concert, “Concerto,” Sunday at 7:30 p.m. in the Cowles Auditorium on the campus of Whitworth College, 300 W. Hawthorne.

The orchestra will perform pieces by Brent Edstrom, an associate professor of music at the school, as well as Ibert, Tomasi and Hue.

The cost of admission is $5, and students and seniors will be admitted free.

Fundraiser

Central United Methodist Church and Shalom Ministries will host an auction Saturday at 6 p.m. at Unitarian Universalist Church, 4340 W. Fort George Wright Drive.

“Missions – Local and Worldwide” will feature items on the auction block such as two tickets to see “Cats” or the Spokane Opera production of “Hansel and Gretel.”

There also will be kayaking lessons, tickets to see the Spokane Indians, overnight stays at the Davenport Hotel and more.

The evening also will also include dinner, dancing and a silent auction, and it will be hosted by Dawn Picken of KREM Morning News.

Tickets are $15.

Spring food bazaar

The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will offer its spring food bazaar Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

The chicken teriyaki lunch will be sold for $9, sushi rolls for $6, inari for $4, and senbei for $3.50.

There also also will be a bake sale and a crafts sale.

Dishes are for dine-in or take-out.

At 7 p.m., the Rev. Sasaki from San Francisco will speak on the topic, “America’s Interest in Buddhism.”

•Christian Singles Fellowship will hold its monthly meeting Saturday at 7 p.m. in the fellowship hall of North Addison Baptist Church, 6120 N. Addison St.

Dean Whitman will speak on this month’s topic, “Building Up Equity.”

Spokane Christian Singles will offer two opportunities for speed dating this weekend.

On Saturday, singles in their 20s, 30s and 40s will meet at 7 p.m. at Colbert Presbyterian Church, 4211 E. Colbert Road.

Singles older than 45 will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, also at Colbert Presbyterian Church.

The cost is $10 for newcomers and $7 for anyone who has attended before.
