Same meet, new site

The 44th annual Mooberry Relays will have a new venue this year. Because of construction at host Rogers High School, the meet will be run instead at Gonzaga Prep.

First events begin at 10 a.m. and the meet will conclude with awards presentations at 5:10 p.m.

“Five Mooberry meet records were set in 2006,” said meet director Lori Shauvin. “With many of the state leaders coming, we anticipate many more will be broken this year.”

Field events are in a team format and there will be 15 relay races on the track as well as several individual events, including the featured Gerry Lindgren mile races, and wheelchair events.

Benefit for Hjelm

The Matthew Hjelm Benefit Concert will be held Saturday from 3-6 p.m. at Deer Park High School.

Hjelm, a junior athlete at Deer Park, died April 7 from complications following an apparent stroke that occurred while he was playing in a junior varsity baseball game in Colville.

Four bands, Small Town Nation, Gutter Balls! Tony the Tiger! and P-36, will perform during the concert. Cost is $7.

A community memorial service for Hjelm will be 10 a.m. Sunday, also at the school.

Golf’s a jumble

Three events into the Greater Spokane League golf season, the boys standings change weekly. Just two strokes separated Mead, Ferris and University at Downriver this week.

The three teams are separated by a point in the standings. The Ferris Saxons lead, but Mead, whose Erick Henderson shot 70 as medalist, has won two of three matches.

GSL-leading Lewis and Clark’s girls, with Chessey Thomas shooting 73 for her second individual win, are unbeaten. Mt. Spokane, Mead and Gonzaga Prep have finished second on a given week and are separated by a point.

Nepon to Montana

Mead distance runner Taylor Nepon has signed a national letter of intent to compete at the University of Montana.

Nepon was injured and ran sparingly during the past cross country season after finishing sixth as a junior. He timed 4:18.21 for sixth in the 2006 state track 1,600 meters and has a best of 9:18.74 for 3,200.

Softball fundraiser

Rogers softball team is sponsoring a sports cards/collectibles show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 12 in the school cafeteria.

The show is a fundraiser for the Pirates’ program.

Tables may be rented for $25 or two for $50. Admission to the school will be $1.
