ATV rally set for Sunday in Kingston

Barbara Minton Correspondent

The second annual Shoot and Scoot Fun Run, an ATV rally ride, is set for Sunday at the Country Lane Resort in Kingston, between Coeur d’Alene and Kellogg. The event is sponsored by the North Idaho ATV Association and Coeur d’Alene Polaris.

The association hopes to rev up memberships with the event, which attracted about 300 quads last year.

“Membership is important to actively support our rights to use public lands,” said Frank Axtell, president of the North Idaho ATV Association.

The more people who sign up, the greater bargaining power the group has for legislation on ATV use in Idaho, he said.

The ATV group advocates responsible riding and hopes to recruit new members to help keep trails open. The club successfully lobbied against a bill that would have prohibited ATVs from traveling on paved surfaces.

Sunday’s event starts with a sign-in at 9 a.m. at Country Lane Resort, which will offer a buffet breakfast earlier that day.

The Shoot and Scoot will be set up around the resort. Participants can buy targets to shoot with air rifles, and winners will receive cash prizes, much like a poker run.

From there, off-road vehicles supplied with garbage bags will go up the Little North Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River, traveling over rough roads and trails to the Hudlow warming hut for lunch, prizes and raffles. Riders who pick up the most garbage will receive special prizes.
