M’s foiled again by Mother Nature

The Seattle Mariners, fresh off breaking a six-game losing skid with a 5-4 win Monday, got another game pushed back by stormy weather.

Tuesday’s game between the Mariners and Texas Rangers game was postponed because of steady rain and will be rescheduled for July 23-25, when the Mariners return to Arlington. Seattle has had six games postponed by rain or snow this season.

“You go to the ballpark ready to play, but there’s that lingering fear that the game will be called,” the Mariners’ Raul Ibanez said. “So it’s frustrating. But you’ve got to deal with it. It’s the hand we’ve been dealt. You have to deal with adversity and stay ready to play.”

Whitney faces off-season rehab

Carolina Hurricanes left winger Ray Whitney had surgery on his right shoulder and expects to be at full strength when training camp begins in September.

Marty Isbell, a doctor in Cary, N.C., performed the surgery, which will be followed by three months of rehabilitation.

Earlier this month, Whitney, the former standout with the Spokane Chiefs, signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract. He led the Hurricanes and tied for 21st in the NHL with a career-high 83 points, and matched another personal best with 32 goals.

Equal big pay at Wimbledon

Wimbledon will be the richest Grand Slam in history, with both the female and male champion earning $1.4 million.

The only Grand Slam tournament on grass will offer total prize money of $22,572,011, an increase of 8.7 percent, organizers said. The increase reflects the recent change to pay women the same as men from the first round to the final for the first time since Wimbledon began offering prize money in 1968. The pay equity was announced on Feb. 22.

Last year, Wimbledon men’s champion Roger Federer earned $1.17 million while women’s champ Amelie Mauresmo took home $1.11 million.

At this year’s Australian Open, Federer and Serena Williams each earned $1.05 million. The French Open will award champions $1.36 million.
