Evelyn Walker

Spokane

Evelyn Walker celebrated her 100th birthday on April 4. She was born in Waverly, Wash., and has lived in Eastern Washington for most of her life.

Walker met her husband, William Walker, in high school. They were married in 1924. He died in 1971.

When asked what her most rewarding life achievement has been, Walker spoke of volunteering to make blankets for wheelchairs. She has made 100 blankets.

Walker says she remains healthy by keeping busy and taking vitamins. She also enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden, and buying homes, fixing them up and selling them, which she did from 1972 to 1999.

Walker says her most memorable moment was during World War II on victory day in Japan when she was living in Seattle working at a drug store. She had to make a delivery and remembers having to follow a car driving diplomats to get through the crowds in downtown Seattle.

She has two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her son, Bill Walker Jr., is deceased.
