Orioles reward Trembley
Dave Trembley can remove the interim tag from his title. From now until at least the end of the 2007 season, he’s simply the manager of the Baltimore Orioles.
The former bullpen coach, who took over for fired manager Sam Perlozzo on June 18, has earned the right to finish the season, Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail said Tuesday.
Baltimore was 29-40 and had lost eight in row when Perlozzo was dismissed. After Tuesday night’s win in Boston, the Orioles are 21-15 under Trembley, including a six-game winning streak that ended Sunday.
Beck’s home had drugs
Police found evidence of cocaine and drug paraphernalia at former major league pitcher Rod Beck’s home on the day he died.
A police report released indicated evidence in several places at Beck’s house, including the bathroom and the master bedroom in which the 38-year-old Beck, a three-time All-Star who saved 286 games, was found dead at his northeast Phoenix home on June 23.
Police also found a loaded semiautomatic handgun in a bag containing numerous glass bowl pipes and torch lighters.
Rodriguez sits
Detroit catcher Ivan Rodriguez dropped his appeal and served his one-game suspension during the Tigers’ game against the Oakland Athletics.
Rodriguez had been suspended for making contact with umpire Mike Winters during a game against the Seattle Mariners on July 12. Rodriguez was arguing that he was interfered with while trying to throw out a base stealer.
