Powell, Sacramento stump Seattle
Nicole Powell scored 28 points and the Sacramento Monarchs beat the Seattle Storm 78-74 Tuesday night in Seattle, to move within one game of first place in the Western Conference.
Powell scored 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Storm cut a 13-point deficit to 71-70, but Powell hit a 3-pointer with a minute left and made four free throws in the final 16 seconds to hold on.
Lauren Jackson had 30 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks to lead Seattle.
Sun 74, Sky 56: At Uncasville, Conn., Katie Douglas scored 18 points, Asjha Jones had 16 points and nine rebounds, and Connecticut beat Chicago. Evanthia Maltsi added 13 points for Connecticut and Lindsay Whalen had 10.
Candice Dupree, who came in averaging almost 18 points for Chicago, was held to four points by Jones.
Fever 66, Mystics 57: At Indianapolis, Tan White scored 20 points to lead Indiana over Washington.
Tamika Whitmore added 17 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the Fever, who won for the first time since losing All-Star Tamika Catchings to a left foot injury July 20 against Detroit.
Sparks 73, Liberty 63: At New York, Mwadi Mabika scored 19 points to lead Los Angeles over the Liberty.
Taj McWilliams-Franklin had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Sparks.
Mercury 76, Comets 74: At Houston, Diana Taurasi scored 19 points and fueled a late comeback as Phoenix beat the Comets.
Trailing by four with just more than 5 minutes to play, the Mercury went on 10-0 run and never trailed again.
Silver Stars 84, Shock 79: At San Antonio, reserve Plenette Pierson scored 22 points to lead Detroit over the Silver Stars.
