Eastern Washington will honor Lothspeich

John Lothspeich, who played basketball at Eastern Washington University in the 1940s, will be honored as the first recipient of the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame Service and Contribution Award during the All Athletes Reunion and Hall of Fame Weekend at EWU on Sept. 29.

The award has been created to recognize extraordinary achievements and contributions by individuals with a past association with the Eastern athletic department.

Lothspeich, after graduating from the college in 1948, spent nearly 20 years as an administrator at EWU.

A 1941 graduate of Colfax High School, Lothspeich has spent his lifetime as an advocate of education.

Awards

University of Idaho cross country and track and field athlete Melinda Ouwerkerk has been chosen as a 2006-07 Western Athletic Conference Stan Bates Award winner.

The award honors the WAC’s top male and female scholar-athletes and recognizes the recipients’ athletic and academic accomplishments.

Hawaii men’s volleyball player Lauri Hakala and San Jose State baseball player Corey Cabral were the other recipients.

Basketball

Adam Morrison will return to Spokane Aug. 16-18 to host the “Triple Threat Weekend” to benefit the American Diabetes Association.

The Charlotte Hornets player and former Gonzaga University great will kick off the weekend with the Adam Morrison Golf Classic at Wandermere, a scramble format tournament, on Aug. 16. Northern Quest Casino will be the site of a Halo2 tournament on Aug. 17. The action then moves to West Valley High School for the fourth annual Horse and BBQ Shootout.

•For the 10th straight year, Papermill Printing teams won 3-on-3 basketball championships at the Washington Senior Games in Tumwater.

The team of Tim Gaebe, Ron Cox, Jim Preston and Tom Flanigan captured Papermill’s 10th consecutive title in the 50-54 age bracket. During that time Papermill teams have compiled a 36-1 record.

The 55-59-year-old team won its sixth straight title and improved to 14-2 overall. Members are Jon Heimbigner (who has organized every team and played on 10 titlists), Jack Soliday, who won the free-throw championship by making 24 of 25 and was second in hotshot competition, Bill Maxey and Dan Steward.

Football

Whitworth University seniors Jay Tully and Casey Clifton have been named preseason All-Americans heading into the 2007 season.

Tully, a strong safety out of Mead High School, was named a second-team All-American by D3football.com and Lindy’s Magazine.

Clifton, a linebacker from University High, was a Lindy’s Magazine second-team selection.

•The Eastern Washington University 2007 Football Preview Show will be broadcast on Comcast Channel 15 throughout August.

On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the show will air at 7 and 9 p.m.

On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays it will air at 8 and 10 p.m.

On Sundays, the show will air at 2 and 7 p.m.

Track and field

Candace Missouri, a sprinter/longer jumper from Vancouver, Wash.; Marlon Murray, a sprinter from Des Moines, Wash.; and Ryan Deese, a high jumper from Colorado Springs, Colo., have signed letters of intent to compete for Washington State University next year.

Canoeing

Spokane’s Jim Bauer and Allison Scott took fifth place in the coed division at the 60th Weyerhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon held last weekend from Grayling to Oscoda, Mich.

The duo finished the 120-mile race in 17 hours, 10 minutes and 19 seconds.

Travis Howell has been named the director of facilities and game management/assistant cross country and track and field coach at Whitworth University.
