Roddick holds off Isner to win Legg Mason title

Andy Roddick put a stop to John Isner’s dream week by beating the unseeded American 6-4, 7-6 (4) Sunday to win his third Legg Mason Tennis Classic title in Washington.

Roddick, who also won here in 2001 and 2005, won his 23rd ATP title by solving Isner’s serve, which had carried him to five straight wins in third-set tiebreakers.

Despite the loss Sunday, a lot has changed in a week for Isner. He will jump from No. 416 to inside the top 200 in next week’s rankings and has been granted a wild card into Cincinnati in two weeks.

•Top-seeded Maria Sharapova earned her first title in 10 months with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Patty Schnyder in the final of the Acura Classic tournament in Carlsbad, Calif.

The No. 2 ranked Sharapova captured her first championship since winning a WTA title at Linz, Austria, in October.

•Second-seeded Tommy Robredo defeated Jose Acasuso 7-5, 6-0 to win the Prokom Open at Sopot, Poland.

•Agnieszka Radwanska routed Vera Dushevina 6-1, 6-1 to win the Nordic Light Open at Stockholm.

Cycling

Cyclist busted

Colombian cyclist Libardo Nino, a silver medalist in the time trial at the Pan American Games, tested positive for the performance-enhancing hormone EPO.

Nino said he was innocent and will challenge the result.

•Kurt Asle Arvesen of Norway became the first two-time winner of the Tour of Denmark cycling race, beating runner-up Enrico Gasparotto of Italy by 14 seconds at Copenhagen, Denmark.

Curlin loses in return

Any Given Saturday spoiled Curlin’s return to the races by pulling away in the stretch and winning the $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Curlin, the Preakness winner, finished third in his first race since losing the Belmont by a head June 9.

•Quarter horse jockey Carlos Bautista has begun serving a one-year suspension for using an electronic buzzer on his horse last year in Sacramento, Calif.

•David Beckham missed his scheduled Major League Soccer debut for the Los Angeles Galaxy’s at Toronto FC with an ankle injury.

•Haile Gebrselassie, a 34-year-old Ethiopian, won the New York City Half Marathon in 59 minutes, 24 seconds.

•Two boxers deported by Brazil were back in Cuba after they disappeared during the Pan American Games last month and were arrested at a resort where officials said they partied and ran up an exorbitant bill.

Guillermo Rigondeaux and Erislandy Lara failed to show up for their scheduled bouts during the Pan American Games last month.
