Hints from Heloise

The Spokesman-Review

Dear Heloise: I enjoy reading your hints and often share them with my friends. But the other day I read one for the first time that I had to disagree with, as far as it being a helpful hint.

It had to do with eyeglass repair, and being an optician I felt that it was important to correct it. For a temporary fix to missing screws on frames, safety pins, dental floss and paper clips are OK, but please do not use wooden toothpicks. What happens is that the toothpick will swell inside the hole and become almost impossible to remove. Sometimes we have to drill them out. So please, don’t use toothpicks for this kind of fix. – J.B., Augusta, Maine

J.B., you are right. I’m not sure where my thinking cap was that day, but it wasn’t on my head. Folks, take a hint from J.B. and don’t use a toothpick to repair your eyeglasses. – Heloise
